I Am Having my ceilings painted, starting tomorrow.

Go with "C" you know you want to and "C" comes with a neighbor referral. It doesn't get much better than that.

Even if by some miracle the other two painters finally got back to you and gave you estimates that were substantially lower, "C" is the better choice because you know you can trust the job and that he'll actually show up to do the job. :thumbsup2

I know that is a commentary on my opinion, but some people from a particular demographic have skills that are handed down in the family and they become very good at what they do. This gentleman is also a carpenter, does renovations in kitchens and baths. I would guess most of us wouldn't bristle at the thought of those from an Italian background being excellent Italian cooks, although Greeks doing very well in that area too. Being 25% French Canadian, I believe that I am entitled to my opinion.

Well, I'm 25% French Canadian as well, and I believe that entitles me to feel insulted by your racist stereotypical comments.

C is definitely the best choice. He came buy today with the contract. Very personable, professional, extremely nice and it was clear that he is very competent. My neighbors are extremely fussy and they loved him. I added DS#1's room. DH painted the ceiling a couple of years ago and I haven't been "thrilled" with it since. And you are right; if the other two came back with estimates substantially lower, I do not think that they would be as good. If we move, I will have terrific ceilings with no flaws as a selling point. If we stay, I will have beautiful ceilings anyway.

I'm part Irish. Think I'll start a potato farm tomorrow. :rotfl:

My wife is 1/2 French Canadian (goes way back to the first white people on PEI) and 25% Italian. She is much better at tiling than drywall.

Could it be that stereotyping while bragging sucks? (not directed to quoted poster).

Of course you are entitled.

It serves us all well to remember that sometimes the opinions that we express say more about ourselves than those we describe.

French-Canadian is not a race, its a nationality and therefore it is not a racist comment.

I am not sure what you think that I am "bragging" about, other than the fact that I have ceilings and they need to be repaired and painted.

When Painter C comments on being very skilled about what he does, in response to my question, "do you think you can fix that", winks and says, "I am French-Canadian you know",(Which, oddly enough, is how I learned that he is French-Canadian) I will try not to be offended being 25% French-Canadian myself. Any more mountains that you want to make out of a mole hill?

BTW, avoid that movie, "White Men Can't Jump". I know plenty of white men and most of them can jump. Its very racist.

French Canadian is an ethnic group, not a nationality.

Unless Quebec separates from Canada (and not all French Canadians live in Quebec), they are Canadians (or Americans/whatever of Canadian descent).

Wow, are you physically incapable of admitting that you were wrong? You stated that French Canadian was a nationality. I pointed out that you were wrong and you cannot even admit that you were.

Wow.

Wow!? Do you need an entire sentence to feel validated? Here ya go!

It is NOT a nationality, its an ethnicity. The point is, French-Canadian is not a race, any more than English, Scottish, Dutch or German are "races". That was the point.

For those of us who grew up in the 60's the word "nationality" was used much more frequently than "ethnicity" but signified the same thing even if it doesn't literally mean the same thing. As a kid, I can't recall hearing one kid, ask another kid, "What is your ethnicity"? The common question was, "What is your nationality". In fact, in fifth grade, when social studies talked about the "melting pot", I recall doing a paper on "my family's nationality".

My husband has been a drywall contractor for over 25 years, and is one of the best in the business, and surprise-he's not French Canadian. He's worked on some amazing houses, including the Ninja Turtle guys houses ( they live in our area). He was asked to do the refurb on the Emily Dickenson House, but was unable because he was too busy. Dawn- we actually live not too far from you ;)
