I am buying a new side by side refridge....help

We used to have a Frigidaire side by side (bought it in '97) and it had nothing but problems; mechanical as well as design problems. The Frigidaire brand is not what it used to be. Every person that I know that has Frigidaire has had problems with them. Never again for us!

Last year, we replaced the Frigidaire with a Whirlpool side by side and it's great. I was looking at a Kitchenaid side by side, and when I went to the store we saw a Whirlpool that looked exactly like it. It turned out that it was the same product, but the Kitchenaid brand cost about $200 more than the Whirlpool. Having a water dispenser on the door (with filter) was a must for us, we all drink lots of water.

We bought a $2100 Whirpool Conquest for $1100 because it had a small dent in the front panel. It was so small that DH couldn't find it but it. I bought my last refrigerator the same way. A high end kenmore with a scratch on the side that faced the wall.

kathytx - do you like your black fridge? I'm mostly asking about the color. I don't want white or beige in my new house, but I don't think that stainless will fit into the budget. I'm leaning toward black because it looks really rich without costing as much as stainless. Just wondering how you liked yours

I really like the black, Tamie. I think it looks good in the room, and it's easy to keep clean.

Our other appliances (dishwasher, oven, cooktop) are all black. We had a bisque refrigerator in this kitchen for years, and I was actually pretty happy when it started acting up and I had an excuse to buy one that matched everything else!

We have a Frigidare side by side & it's a piece of crap. I would never buy one again. Buyer beware too....Maytag was bought out by Frigidare but they never changed the Maytag name because of the former Maytag reputation. That explains why I'm less than pleased with my Maytag stove too! I found out that bit of news too late.

We got a new fridge when we moved into our "new" home.

I got the side by side & love it. I have no problem with pizza boxes fitting. It has a single disp for filtered water/crushed ice/ice cubes. The kids drink a lot more water this way! I chose the single disp. because it could fix larger glasses (even our coffee pot)

We got a Hotpoint. It is made by GE. They are the same - only the name is different. We also chose to purchase one that was "out of the box". It was MUCH cheaper! There was a small scrape in the very back (that is against the wall), but because it was "damaged" it was much cheaper. You would never know. It took us hours to see it, you have to stand at a certain angle.

Anyway, thats my .02 cents.

kild...yes, you can get the wide by side in stainless...we just did! Dont have it yet though, kitchen isnt done.

I appreciate all the opinions. I know that a lot of people don't like the side by side due to freezer size but that doesn't really bother me. We want the water/ice dispenser. I am still looking.
