I need opinions on GE, Frigidaire, and others.
I want to spend about $1000...so don't suggest those really fancy ones...:p

but I just wanted to ask about brands and what people like.
I know what features I want but its hard to pick the model.
I am also looking at 26 cubic feet.

THANKS !!

We purchased a side by side Kenmore and hate it, Can't put a frozen pizza in the freezer section unless it is on its side.

Next time will buy the freezer on the bottom model

Good luck with your choice

I have a GE Profile Series, side by side. I have to tell you, I think they give you very little freezer room, and if you get an ice cube crusher and water dispenser, forget it.

I swore I would not buy another side by side but when I went looking there was really nothing out there.. I like a lot of freezer room and lately I have not seen much for that in refrigerators.

Good luck!!!

::yes::

ITA - you get SOOO much more freezer room with a bottom freezer model. We're on our second now (first one got sold with the first house.)

Our first one was a white Kenmore bottom mount freezer w/ ice maker (around $1100 back in 2001 - so I'm assuming cheaper now). It had a swing out freezer door.

We just bought the Kenmore Trio in stainless steel (it comes in white/black) - it's 2 doors at the top, with a pull out freezer drawer - love it. (this also has an ice maker and water dispenser - the water dispenser is internal though)

I have the GE Profile with the water dispenser etc and the beverage centre in the door. Ugh I have no room at all! Hate it!
It has been reliable though I have to give it that...

We had an Amana, 24 foot I think, for about 25 years, loved it. Replaced it with another, about 8 years ago, love it. Both side-by-sides, water and ice dispenser in the new one.

I have a Maytag side by wide and like it, BUT, we moved our old standard GE into the garage and use that to store frozen pizza, etc.

We haven't had any problems, but Consumer Reports lists Maytag as having high repair issues.

You can fit a body in a bottom freezer model. Just a little tidbit to help you decide!

I'm pretty happy with my Maytag Wide-by-Side. It mostly solves the problem of the freezer being too narrow by making the doors sort of zig-zag.

Hard to explain, here's a photo:

I have a Whirlpool side by side and I love it. It is just wide enough to lay down a frozen pizza. It seems big enough to me, prior to that I had a top freezer model, and I like this much better.

I like that! Wonder if I can get that in stainless?

I think I have seen something like that in stainless...most fridges do come in stainless these days...and you still have to pay out the yang for them! hehehe

but so worth it! Just stock up on the 'stainless steel cleaner' at sears (not supposed to use windex or anything) unless you get the "fingerprint free" satin finish.

I have a KitchenAid side by side and really like it--there is very little I can't fit in the freezer.

I'd also suggest that if you are a water drinker, get one with a dispenser....I can't imagine living without it now!

I'm another person who would NEVER buy another side-by-side. Mine is Whirlpool and I guess it's fine, but I don't care for the cramped space in either the freezer or the refrigerator. I'm constantly digging around for something. And it has the baskets, roll-out shelves, clear shelves, etc. I would rather have a $600 standard one any day.

Another complaint -- I would NEVER EVER get the crushed ice dispenser again b/c it sprays ice all over the place. You clean it up, but you miss a spot, a kid walks in it, and suddenly the floor is a mess. We don't even use the water dispenser as much as I thought we would.

We had two GE side by sides before we got our Maytag. I loved the GE ones of old, but haven't had one of the newer ones. I like the Maytag (bought in 2000), and I have a Jenn-Aire (same as the Maytag) counter depth side by side for the new house. I don't need a lot of freezer space, so it isn't an issue.

The Maytag site shows it available in White, Bisque, Stainless and Black. Looks like they list the Stainless at about $300 more than the others. Mine's black.

If you do a web search on "Maytag Wide by Side" you'll get lots of info.

One little thing I like- there's a water filter in it, and I really like having the filtered and chilled water available from the dispenser. I find I drink a lot more water since getting this refrigerator, just because it's so convenient and tastes so much better than our tap water.
