I went to a school for a job interview today. I was really excited, cause the school was not far, has a good reputation, and the position was for second grade, which is what I want to teach.

I arrived fifteen minutes early, and the secretary told me that the principal was with someone, and that she'd be with me soon. Anyway, after about ten minutes, I hear some people come out of one of the offices...I heard someone say, "Ms. So and So, I'd like you to meet Ms. So and So, she's our new second grade teacher. I just offered her the job, and she accepted."

My heart just fell through the floor. A minute or two later, the principal came around the corner and introduced herself (it was her who had been speaking) and we went ahead with my interview. I didn't say anything, but the whole time I was thinking, "Why bother?" It really makes me angry. She can hire whomever she wants, but I did not need to hear about it right before I went in to interview for the same position.

I mean, don't people wait to interview everyone they've scheduled before they make a decision? Does this just happen in education, or everywhere?

I'm very sad. A big waste of my time today

 That is horrible. I am sorry you had to waste your time and didnt get the job.

Actually, it can't happen here. Schools are required by law to advertise employment opportunities for a specified amount of time. They may make a decision in their own minds, but can't make an actual offer until the time has expired for the posting and interviews have been completed.

WOW! That is frustrating, but it does happen. My daughter went for an audition at WDW and they had filled the position the day before. BUt don't totally dispair because if you interviewed well they may think of you for something else. My daughter was hired later to go and work at Tokyo Disney Sea from that original audition.

It is pretty unprofessional to hire someone before you've completed all the interviews. But it's downright tacky to introduce the new hire around while people are waiting for their interview. Is it possible there are other positions open that you're qualified for? Did you ask about the 2nd grade position? Sorry this happened to you :( .

Are you sure there was only one position? It doesn't seem ethical to do that if she still have candidates to interview.

There will be something else, hang in there.

I'm sorry.:( That seems unethical, tacky, rude or whatever you want to call it on the way the situation was handled. If this is the way they handle things, then maybe you don't want a job there.

I am sorry to hear you had to go through that! That was very thoughtless of the principal!

But...think of it this way..at least you do not have to work for such a thoughtless principal!

you overheard the conversations, maybe the interviewer didn't know you were there. Anyway.

School districts in the metro area here have a common job bulletin web site. Maybe there are other elementary positions in your area.

At least you gained more experience in the interview process. If you think you made a good impression, call the principal and ask her if there are any jobs at other schools. Principals belong to various trade organizations and they network. Good Luck.

I certainly hope (and assume) she didn't know I was there. But the way the office is set up, anyone in the waiting room can hear what is being said, even though you can't quite see us. I guess she maybe lost track of time, or forgot she had another interview, who would be waiting there?

There are other positions, not at this school, but regardless, that is not what I'm upset about. Anyway...

I am so very sorry that happened to you. It was totally unprofessional on the part of the principal to introduce her as the new teacher and then continue the interview with you.

Sorry you had to hear that comment. Just maybe she will change her mind having heard your interview!:D

Not that it would be right, but I probably would have said something. "I am here to apply for the second grade position. Is it still open?"

Maybe the new teacher will quit before school starts.
