We are flying into Orlando Sanford next week and renting a car.

We will be leaving the airport around 6:30 pm and I figured I-4 would be busy on a Friday evening at that time.

If we choose to use 417, is it still a toll road? How does that work with a rental car? I remember a car service we used a few years ago had some sort of sticker on the windshield where he didn't have to stop.

If we do have to pay tolls, how much would we need for Orlando Sanford to Disney?

Thanks!!

Yes, 417 is a toll road. I don't know how much it will be from Sanford to Disney. I did a round trip from Disney to Oviedo earlier this year and I think it was round $5 or $6 each way. If you look at Wikipedia, I think they have a detailed exit list, including toll plazas so I'm sure you can figure it out.

The installed SunPass on rental cars varies by agency and varies by what they charge. I think some charge by the day, some by the number of days you hit a toll plaza, etc. When you're looking at rental cars, read their policies carefully and figure out if it will work for you. If you decline the SunPass, some agencies still have the transponder attached to the windshield...make sure you properly disable it.

The 417 from Sanford to the Irlo Bronson exit (as close to Disney as you can exit) is 4 tolls I believe, I recall it was a bit over $6. You can definitely count on a slowdown on the first leg of the I4 once you exit the 528, but with luck, it may only add 10-15 minutes to the drive.

I travel Sanford frequently, love direct flight, lower cost and smaller airport. I wasn't convinced at first, until I tried MCO again.
But I took the GPS route 417, it was a few tolls, I take a pack of dollars and rolls of quarters when traveling. My only problem was the easy pull in pay cash ask for a toll receipt. You would exit to the cash only booths. Somehow there were a few tolls, they were really exits, I was use to pulling off to the cash lane and ended up twice exiting paying a toll and getting back on. No biggie, maybe an extra $1.50 or so.

I just downloaded WAZE on a Labor Day trip to the beach and love this APP. I use it daily now. It shows traffic alerts, debri in the roadway, closed roads, accidents, police, and you can find gas stations ext.
I have a window mount, charging cord and stick the iPhone up there.

Going to Disney I saw the other side of 417 was at a standstill for an accident. On the trip back, I-4 had traffic delays that were making our car drop and security a challange to meet. I'd rather pay the tolls if it looks like traffic on I-4.. Oh, there is a toll free option to input too.

Not to mention I-4 is under construction!
We always take 417 we get off at Landstar Blvd. which is the first exit after the airport and we stop at the Publix that is 1/2 from the highway. Or we stop on Orange Blossom Trail at the Super Target that you can see from the highway. Very little traffic on 417. Take 35 minutes to get to WDW

We love 417, the tolls are over $7.00. We pack two rolls of quarters for the quick exact change lane, but there's always one lane with an attendant.

417 doesn’t have as many lanes so there isn't as much of the cutting across lanes by crazy tourists who don't know what they're doing lol. I feel much calmer on 417. My sanity is worth at least $7.00.

Many guests will find the 536/535 exit off of 417 better than going all the way to the Irlo Bronson (192) exit.

Stay on 536 and it takes you into the middle of Walt Disney World. Although the primary destination is Epcot, there are exits for Disney Springs (Downtown'), Port Orleans, and Swan/Dolphin followed by a small bear left for Magic Kingdom, and other areas to the west.

If you skip the 536/535 exit, next comes the Osceola Parkway exit off of 417 which also goes directly into WDW. Directly to Animal Kingdom if you go far enough. With easy connections to other parts of WDW too.

Just want to point out that there is an unattended exact change toll booth on the Osceola Pkwy exit, so have a few quarters available if not using SunPass or a rental company toll payment plan. The toll is 75 cents.
