Anyone on here diagnosed with Hypothyroidism?

I was just diagnosed with this after having 40 day cycles. Dr did a blood test and it showed up positive for this:confused3

I've been on Synthroid for a few days now. What are some of the common side effects that you all get??

Also, has anyone had any luck with getting pregnant after discovering they have a thyroid problem like this and getting it treated?? We've have had problems TTC.

Thanks :goodvibes

Hi!

Congratulations...in the lottery of things that can go wrong with your body, hypothyroidism is one of the best things to win. It is easily and cheaply treatable.

Do you know what your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level was, when you were diagnosed? The higher the number, the more out of whack your thyroid is.

Also, do you know what dose of synthroid you are on? The doctor will gradually increase the dose until it reaches an effective level. For me, I started at 25 micrograms, increased to 50, and then skipped to 100 at my request when my TSH was still going up at 50 (usually they will go to 75 first). My TSH levels have been stable and in the right range (less than 3) since then.

Let me tell you, when you get the balance right, you will start feeling human again. I didn't realize how bad I felt until I started feeling good again. My energy levels went up, but mostly my moods became much more stable. I had been having these barely controllable feelings of rage that disappeared once I was on the right dose of synthroid.

I can't comment on having ttc issues, since I was diagnosed a couple of years before ttc and I had no trouble any of the three times I tried to get pregnant. However, my periods were also seriously weird as well before diagnosis (I got mine every 21 days and it lasted a week). After, they were much more regular. If your hormones are out of whack, though, it is very likely that it is the cause of your ttc problems. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it is going to only take this easy fix to get things right for you. :goodvibes

Wow.You are so lucky.I envy you! Seriously.I have been fighting weight gain for years now and have fought tooth and nail to keep weight off much less lose any weight.I'm too embarassed to say how much weight I have gained but last week I decided to go and get a thyroid test.
I was hoping and praying when they called yesterday that my test was off in some way.But nope. They said the tests came back normal.
I was in shock and very dismayed about the whole thing.
So that's why I think your lucky.

 Hi! I have hypothyroidism, too. (I also have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis going on.) We're still playing with my med levels to get me balanced just right, but I feel a lot closer to human than I did before my diagnosis a couple of years ago.

I haven't noticed any bad side effects from my thyroid meds. The only thing I've really noticed is I feel less tired and I'm not quite so cold all the time. Good luck! :)

I just got my test results in the mail today. My TSH was 4.06 with the norm being between 0.40-4.20
And my T-4 Free was 1.31 with the norm being 0.8-1.9

No, I understand what you are saying....but NOONE is "lucky" to have thyroid issues. It's a lifetime thing that needs to be constantly medicated. And if your levels are off - the rest of your body is screwed-up. Thyroid is the bodies ultimate hormone - can you imagine having that messed up, and the effects it would have on your body?

No offense, I understand the sentiment - but thyroid issues are no walk in the park if you KWIM. ;)

To the OP - yes, thyroid problems can be the cause of pregnancy issues - so good luck to you now that you have the meds you need:hug: . Once you conceive, you'll need to get your levels checked once a month but it can usually be done right at your OBGYN. I had the pregnancy induced kind, but didn't find out until months after my son was born - I often wonder if that was the cause of his autism because it went unknowingly untreated during pregnancy - meh, normal to look for a blame, but it's one of my thoughts.

BTW, I conceived DD just fine after dx with no complications during pregnancy at all.

Good luck! :goodvibes

Oh, some of the side effects can be heart palpitations, trouble sleeping, I get shaky if I don't eat something an hour after taking my synthroid stuff like that for me. Also, the dosage you're on right now may not be the dosage you end up on - they should be rechecking your levels withing a few months to see if they have you on the right dosage.

Also look for diet changes to help you - less sugars, more complex carbs. And watch what you eat within 3-4 hrs before or after taking the meds. Things like broccoli and different foods can affect the meds - but my endocrinologist said that as long as they aren't eaten within a few hrs you're ok.

My niece was born with it. She's now 12. She takes a shot and some kind of "fountain of Youth" pill. I can't remember the name of the drug, but years ago 20/20 did a special on this medication and called it, "The Fountain of Youth". Many very rich elderly people were taking it. Apparently it completely restores your body. She was hardly NEVER sick, not even when her two other sibling got chicken pox, that drug she takes it like a sick fighter. She can fight off almost everything. When she is sick, even with a slight fever, she has to go to the hospital. Anyway my nieces Pituitary didn't development in the womb. He looks and acts perfectly normal, but she does have some issues. She is legally blind in one eye and she is small for her age. We were really just hoping she grows to 5 feet. Right now she about 4'9. She might not every have a cycle, but we are all hopeful. A lot of things are touch and go for her. Most people are diagnosis when they are older so my niece being a baby and taking meds for that long, no one really knows what will exactly happen to her.

I was diagnosed after the birth of my daughter, so 5 1/2 years ago. Last year I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's.

This is something you'll deal with the rest of your life. You'll have your ups and downs. The medication is not a cure-all for making you feel wonderful. I honestly haven't felt 100% in years. I've been on Synthroid since the beginning, and I'm in the process of finding another endocrinologist because I want to try another med.

Too many doctors treat to the blood work results, they don't care about your symptoms.

Make sure you see an endocrinologist, not just your family practice doctor.

Good luck.

Be prepared to lose 1/3 of your eyebrows. The condition will cause it, and so can the meds -- everyone I know who has hypothyroidism has truncated eyebrows that they have to pencil in. I have red hair, so I've spent the last 9 years in a never-ending quest for the perfect eyebrow pencil.

I developed Hashimoto's just after my eldest was born; my thyroid sped up insanely and I lost 50 lbs. in just a few months. When it finally destroyed itself I crashed hard, then started gaining weight again at record speed. Even once you get yourself stabilized on meds, weight will have a tendency to stick like glue; it's very hard to lose it when your thyroid is naturally low.

As for TTC, give the Synthroid a chance. I never did have any luck getting pregnant when I was taking Synthroid, but all of the testing said that it wasn't the cause of my secondary infertility. I switched to natural Thyroid hormone (swine thyroid) for other reasons 4 years in, and suddenly was able to get pregnant easily but not stay pregnant. Eventually my OB tried having me take mega-doses of folic acid, and for whatever reason, I managed to get one to stick. My kids are 10 years apart.

The standard for normal is now .3-3... . You are out of norm for that range but not the one your dr has. Fortunatly you aren't very far out of normal so getting your levels down will be pretty easy. My TSH level was 95 when I was diagnosed so it took quite a while to get thing normalized. I have been on the same dose for about 12 years now. I don't know that there are any side effects from the medication as it is replacing something that your body naturally produces. Feeling better would be the one major side effect :rotfl: .

I have never heard about the eyebrow thing-it didn't happen to me at all. Is it just with Hashimoto's that that happens? I have just plain old hypothyroid.

It is very possible that getting your thyroid under control will help you try to conceive as it is a hormone regulator in the body.

Yep, no eyebrow thing going on here, either (although I'm sick of getting them waxed every six weeks, so I wish there was!) ;)

I've been dealing with it since I was 16. I've had 4 children and no issues with my eyebrows whatsoever (except they grow in too darn fast! LOL)

I used to take Synthroid but my Dr switched me to Levoxyl many years ago. Guess it breaks down faster in your system.

Normal TSH range 0.3 to 3.0
Over 6 is considered indicative of hypothyroidism. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has revised these guidelines as of early 2003, narrowing the range to .3 to 3.0. Many labs and practitioners are not, however, aware of these revised guidelines.

Hypothyroidism is known to cause periods to come more frequently. You seem to have the opposite. The doctor did say hypo not hyper right? Do you have your labs?

Another with Hashimoto's - no eyebrow issue for me either :thumbsup2

I had been on 125 for 15 or so years but my last TSH was 4.82 so my endo upped it to 150 last month. I had been losing weight and hit a plateau about a year ago so hopefully this gets me past that.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 1 1/2 years ago. I still haven't found the correct dosage yet. I've had no problems with my eyebrows. However, I am constantly exhausted. It is a struggle to get out of bed every morning. I originally went to the dr because of excessive sweating on my head.

I am self diagnosing myself for the moment but I think I might have this. For the past two years, my thyroid results have been slightly screwed up (can't remember the numbers). Both times the doctor had me get a new blood test 4 months later and both times the results were normal. :confused3

I am constantly cold and always tired and those two things have gotten much worse in the past year. I go in for my physical at the end of the month. I will be very interested to see what my results are.
