Last night as Dh & I were discussing, possibly buying DVC points, DH asked, "Ok, well what would happen to your points if a hurricane like Andrew came through and wiped it all out?" Is he an optimist or what? So, I told him I would ask you guys. Does insurance cover such a loss? If we spent $15000-20000, and a hurricane came through next year & destroyed it all, what would happen to our points/money?

Ha ha ha! I own at VB and, believe it or not, I asked my guide this very question. She couldn't definitively answer me, but she said she was sure that Disney would be able to ensure that I was appropriately taken care of. I would assume there is adequate insurance to cover such a situation.

Disney does have "catastrophic" insurance coverage. IIRC, the POS addresses this issue.

My understanding is that Disney would decide whether or not to rebuild. If yes, those who own points at that resort would not be able to use their points until the rebuilt resort is ready for occupancy. If Disney decides not to rebuild, the owners would get a proportional share of the insurance proceeds.

FWIW, I think it is very, very, very unlikely that a hurricane would be able to completely destroy a resort so far inland. We're probably more vulnerable to human-caused catastrophes than those of Mother Nature. Anyway, it's not something I spend much time worrying about.

If anyone has a better or different understanding of the catatrophic insurance situation, I'm sure he/she will post.

Best wishes -

I knew a contractor who was involved in the original construction at MK. He was of the opinion that Disney greatly overbuilt its structures so that only the most extraordinary disaster could close the park for more than a day or so. I suspect that they still maintain that standard for any structures that they consider "permanent."
