Hypocritical to Be Vegetarian, but...

Actually they do! DH test drove a Ford Expedition that had heated and cooled seats. He said when the seats started to cool it felt like you had just pee-d your pants! :rotfl:

Uh oh, I'm toast then! :teeth:

True that I don't profess to not use animal products. And the licorice that I'm eating tonight does have gelatin in it.

I guess I look at it more vivilasvegas and I'm drawing my line in the sand in a certain place and that place might change in the future.

Hopefully I'll like the leather seats in the summer--too bad they don't have seats that get cold in the summer like they have seats that heat in the winter. My reason for getting the seats, besides the fact that they came on the higher trim line that had the tv and the navigation system is that I'm tired of my kids getting the other seats so dirty with their dirty baseball clothes, etc. At least leather can wipe off.

I think Saab makes a car with air-conditioning in the seats! That would be cool! The heat always catches me off guard :rotfl:

Lisa loves Pooh, are you vegetarian?

No--I like chicken too much and don't like soy enough for a suitable protein replacement. And I do eat pork on occasion.

I'm just a vegetarian wannabe :flower: .

Red meat = :crazy2: .

And if it was a baby--I don't eat it (So no lamb or veal :scared: ).

That's funny!

First time I sat in a heated seat car--I didn't know it had heated seats and for a minute there I thought I was about to encounter the most humiliating experience of my life. Thankfully--all that resulted was a nice warm tushy. :hyper:

I suppose if I could think cooled seats someone would have already invented them. Shelby, funny about your DH--seems that it would be the heated seats that would give the feeling of pee. :rotfl: I like the heated seats in general, but love them when I'm crampy. A couple days ago our weather was so warm I had to open the sunroof, but it was a little cold with it opened so I turned on the heated seat. That's just wrong, though. :teeth:

When I first test drove the van with heated seats my bum was getting a little too warm, but I was too embarrassed to tell that to the saleperson who was sitting in the passenger seat and I didn't have the skill to look for the control to turn it down. :rotfl2:

Leather is a by-product of the meat industry. The cows are killed for the meat and the leather is then utilized to some degree. The animals are not killed for the leather since that demand is not as great as the demand for meat.
Just to be snarky, if everybody became a vegetarian, we wouldn't have that "by-product" leather. Saying that it is okay to use the leather just because the animal is getting killed anyway really isn't such a strong argument IMO.

For the record, I don't eat red meat (except the occasional ball park hot dog). I eat poultry and fish, but we mainly live on a vegetarian diet. DW also doesn't do red meat and is allergic to all seafood. That kind of pushed us into vegetarian cooking as our main thing. But we do use and wear leather products. No fur, though, because neither of us care for it and DW is allergic to it.

I used to work with the wife of the car dealer I bought van from. When it was time for service, she and I would swap cars. She would take the van home and her husband would take it to the shop.

Well, one time, I took her Jeep. It was dark when I got in and I had never driven the car before. As I was driving, my butt was getting hotter and hotter. I couldn't figure out why or how to fix it. I finally had to pull over and turn on the dome light and search for the controls on the dash. I don't know why the heck anybody would want a seat that can get as hot as that one did.

I think it depends on your reasoning. If you are a vegetarian because "meat is murder", then hell yeah, you're being a hypocrite.

I agree!!! If a person thinks that killing an animal for meat is murder I think it would actually be worse to kill an animal to make leather seats etc. You could argue that people have to eat to stay alive, but you don't need leather seats for survival! By the way, I am not a vegetarian or a vegan so I think it is fine to have leather seats!

Good point--but everybody isn't going to become a vegetarian.

And FTR--my mini-van with leather seats was purchased *used* (all be it a very new used) and my leather-wear is limited to footwear. I have HUGE feet that are flat and wide and I will purchase a shoe when it is perfect. Perfect means it will not cause ailments and it matches the purpose for which is was purchased. Just checked and I *think* the majority of my stuff is synthetic, so evidently I have done a good job as of late in my footwear purchases.

While leather *looks* pretty in a jacket...I just don't like wearing it. I wished they made better pleather alternatives.

I can't have leather couches either. Just don't like the way they look anyway. I like a nice fabric. It doesn't stick to your skin.

True and if there is a time that so many people become vegetarian that leather is no longer a by-product then I will reconsider my choice. And honestly I don't know if the hides that are used in the production of leather really are from animals that were killed for meat. I was told that, but I figure that it helps justify it to myself so I'll stick with that story. :teeth: Hey, at least I'm being honest with myself! :rotfl:

And I just can't use that "snarky" word any more after that snarky thread. I'll never look at that word the same! :rotfl2:

The only leather couch that I want is one for our bedroom. I'd like to make a little "sitting area" in our bedroom and don't want a fabric couch because of the animal hairs on it and because I don't want something that holds the dust (dust allergies). Don't know that I will ever actually get what I want, but it's in my master plans. :)

We have microfiber. I have to vacuum it weakly b/c items set on the surface instead of going into the couch. I hope this means that it isn't taking in much dust as a regular couch. I LOVE them :).

This is something that I have never understood about vegetarians. It is not okay to kill an animal to nourish yourself or your family but it is ok to have shoes that look nice or last longer or to have nice looking seats in your car :confused3

To each their own, but I simply do not understand this logic! (Of course , only applies to vegetarians who do it for the animals sake!)

My reasons are because I can nourish myself and my children without meat, but I believe that leather shoes are more durable than canvas and breathe better than pleather (plastic "leather").

Lisa loves Pooh, I think that the micro fiber is a good alternative, but I get so sick of vacumming furniture. Our living room couches aren't hard to vacuum and the good thing is that they show all the dog hair so I vacuum them often. Our family room couches, though, are a pain--harder to vacuum and I can't see the hair on them easily so it goes too long between vacuumings. Of course I could vacuum more often... :rotfl:

Me too! We got a microfiber couch and loveseat for our living room last year. I'm so glad we did. It's very comfortable, easy to clean and people think it's suede! :rotfl:

Being a vegetarian myself, I would think it's hypocritical for me to buy leather. The main reason I don't eat meat is because animals don't need to die for me to have a healthy diet. I also don't think they have to die for me to have decent shoes. I have one pair of suede Doc Martens that I bought before I became vegetarian, and they're still going! I'm not going to throw out perfectly good shoes, so I still wear them. (The rest of my shoes are non-leather. Some hold up better than others.) That said, I'm satisfied when people make some inroads to not using or eating things that required an animal's death to create. Perhaps I may go further than some vegetarians, but I'm not going to point my finger and say "you suck" because someone who doesn't eat meat does buy leather products. When someone's already doing things that are good for animals, I hardly feel the need to criticize. It isn't constructive. And certainly nobody has to be just like me!

Hmmm, let me go look that one up. hehehe Here it is: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=982535&highlight=snarky The link to the urban dictionary was taken out of the thread but you can look it up. That's why you might of seen a reference to "snarky, but not in a #10 sort of way". :rotfl2:

And once you read the thread and the urban dictionary definition the word will really crack you up!

I don't want to upset anyone but we raise beef on our land and the hide is taken as part of the 'payment' for butchering and is sold to companies who tan and prepare it for use in making leather goods. It is a common practice in Montana when beef is butchered.
