Hypocritical to Be Vegetarian, but...

You don't upset me. :teeth: I'm glad to see all parts of the animal used and if it is going to be killed for the meat I much prefer that as many parts of the animal be used as possible.

Tigger&Belle, I have a feeling that you're posting this thread just to bait me, but I'm not falling for it. Ya hear me? I'M NOT FALLING FOR IT!!!

Hey, it took me nearly 24 hours to come up with that!!! :teeth:

not eating animal products but using them when it is comfortable, stylish, or convenient does not jive to me.

Because....?

Hi Tigger&Belle! I believe that if leather seats are right for you, don't feel like a hypocrite about it. My personal view on leather is this: I decided that it is better for me to buy leather shoes if need be rather than pleather shoes since leather is biodegradable and most pleather is not. I would rather buy a pair of good leather shoes that will last many years than many pairs of pleather shoes that will sit in a landfill till who knows when. (Cloth-type shoes are just not an option in NYC winter.) I went two years leather free while contemplating this issue and see leather in this instance as being better for the environment in the long run. The same logic can be applied to your situation. Cloth seats get too dirty for your family's needs and pleather can be unhealthy to our environment. In this case, leather can be seen as a good compromise for both your familiy (durable and cleanable) and the environment (biodegradable).
Also, as other posters pointed out, cow leather results from the butchering process. So even being a vegetarian who stopped eating meat because of ethical reasons, I don't see it as wrong to use the leather if you must as the whole animal is being used in some way just as it would be in nature.

Here is what I don't understand. It is not ok to kill to eat the meat but since they killed it anyway it is ok to wear them on your feet or sit on them? Who in nature (other than humans) uses anything but the meat :confused3 So what you are saying is no I can't eat theat because it was an animal but check out my cool new leather Manolo's :confused3

Vegetarians can do what they like. I just don't understand this argument other than it is a way to try an find a way around the ethical argument.

I'm not saying that you can't eat meat. Or I can't eat meat. Not making any judgements on what you do or do not eat. And I make my choices based on what I'm comfortable with. And I think that several points have been brought up on why it's not an ethical issue for some vegetarians to use leather.

And it would be my cool, new Easy Spirits... ;)

If a person doesn't embrace all aspect of a religion most people think that they shouldn't walk away from that religion as long as they believe in the fundamental parts of that religion.

Interesting point, kittythepoohbear. Hadn't thought about leather being biodegradable. Of course with my leather seats and a lot of leather furniture, it's only partly leather and the rest a substitute. Not the case with a lot of shoes.

mtblujeans, we might need to wait a while longer... :teeth:

Well, human history shows that humans use all of the animal out of necessity. Other animals have no need for the biproducts after consumption. But, one would assume that, once the biproducts rot into the ground they are also providing a positive service in the form of nutrients into the ground.
