Has anyone tried hypnotherapy for anything (weight loss, smoking, stress, etc.)? I’ve had various stressful issues in my life lately and am looking for stress/anxiety reduction methods that might work for me. I’d love to hear about people’s experiences, whether positive or negative.

I did "hypnobirthing" for natural child birth. The whole natural child birth thing still hurt, but maybe I screamed less than I would have otherwise??? :-)

I don't want to go into detail.... I have, but it didn't help at all. I don't know if age is a factor, but I was an older tween/young teen at the time.

I've never tried it, but I'm curious. Not to mention weary: What if the hypnotist programs you to commit heinous crimes?
That's the plot of my new thriller, Hypocalypse! A story that just may change your life.

PS- I've heard many success stories of people quitting smoking through hypnosis. Recently I've seen ads for Kerry Gaynor's method, which claims to have helped people stop smoking. I'm not sure how effective hypnosis is for anxiety and stress, however.

You could try breathing techniques and meditating to ease your symptoms. There's multiple videos on Youtube to guide you for free. I just searched, and I see results for hypnosis videos as well.

I am a non-smoker because of hypnotherapy I undertook in 1994. I had smoked 1.5 packs a day, started smoking 17 years before that. Have never had a single puff since. It cost $40, took place in a hotel ballroom with 150 people at the same time. The program was two hours long. Can't recommend it highly enough--at least for smoking cessation. I am sure it saved my life. I was 37 years old.

I have also been hypnotized three times for weight loss, and none of them "took." Maybe because you still do have to eat? Whereas, the smoking cessation was cold turkey. No patch, no gum, no drugs, no cutting down first--just done. The post hypnotic suggestion was that as soon as the thought of wanting a cigarette entered your mind, a completely different thought would jump in and occupy you. This happened over and over for me. "Oh, I want to smoke a cig---gee, I better get to my laundry or I will have no clean clothes left." And I would go start sorting my laundry. The thought of smoking would enter my mind again 5 minutes later (in those first couple of days, it was that frequent) and suddenly I would remember that I never called so-and-so back. So I would stop working on the laundry, make that quick call, and then come back to the laundry task again.

About 1/4 of people cannot be hypnotized, due to their neurology. It's worth a try, but it may not work on you.

I paid for a program to help me give up cigarettes about 30 years ago. His manner just grated on my every nerve. At intermission he mentioned that he would also give out information on his marital counseling programs. He had already let slip that he had just married his third wife. I was happily married for 32 years. I thought to myself 'why would I take advise from this guy? I got purse and drove home. Quit on my own a little later. I don't think I am a good subject.

off-topic...

I can't remember the author, read a book where a woman was going to a doctor for some issue and when she was home asleep, she woke up feeling, well, you know. Turns out her doctor hypnotized her and was visiting at night. Can't remember if it was Dean Koontz or a detective genre like James Patterson or Johnathan somebodyorother. It's been a very long time since I've read a book like that.

I did years ago to relax before a state board exam. A lot of other students recommended it, so I figured why not.
The process made me very uncomfortable. I felt that I could easily “go under,” did not like that sensation of loss of control, so quickly shook it off, left and never went back.

I hadn’t thought about that in practically forever…until seeing this thread.

I'm currently studying to become a hypnotherapist. Have even been hypnotised a few times, hehe! It came over me like a warm blanket... I'd definitely recommend it, if only for the experience.
