Hydroponic gardening

Yes, many years ago and it was fun. About all I can recall was that we set up our garden inside in an unused hobby room and began growing tomatoes. The growth rate was unbelievably fast! The tomatoes were large, had beautiful color but little taste. This may have very well been the case had they been grown outside in soil...will never know. It was amazing to get up each morning and see how they'd grown overnight.

We did tomatoes on our back porch. Also flavorless but fun to watch. I took a backlot tour of EPCOT which included their gardens. The hydroponic was very cool there.

What I have been reading the taste depends on the nutrients added. Have to research that more.

if you want to try it out on an easy/introductory level get an aerogarden. it's a simple way to give it a try. the kits come with the nutrients, and the unit will notify you if the reservoir is getting low on water.

we've done herbs and the spring mix lettuces both of which were very flavorful. we now get the pods that can be used to start up plantings for our vegetable and flower gardens (we've got several veggies going now as well as a variety of flowers).

hubby tried full scale hydroponics on a few plants-it's not cheap to do the set up, and requires a dedicated area with water and electricity to set it up.

Yes but do not tell anyone.

it's no secret in our neck of the woods. with the recent laws passed here every hardware store has a huge selection of hydroponics, grow lights, nutrients and books dedicated to 'medicinal and recreational growing hobbyists:rotfl:'

I imagine it has been a booming business in Washington and Colorado.

Sorry folks, I have no interest in marijuana. My personal view is anyone who uses it is a bonehead.

Besides explain how you sneak it when it will be outside in an urban area.

those who are medical marijuana patients in Washington state (much more restrictive diagnosis criteria vs. other states where medical is legal while recreational is not) are permitted to grow up to 15 plants privately-although given the weather climate here, most individuals report that the expense of growing is cost prohibitive vs. currently purchasing at licensed state providers-something that will likely change with impending "sin tax" legislation (as well as the medical patient's ability to grow for private use).

no need to 'sneak' it-so long as a person consumes in a non public place it's not illegal. public places can fine up to $50 for an infraction.

I personally can't tolerate the stuff, but I prefer the concept of my nearby small town permitting a high security legal hydroponic grow facility in their corporate park vs. when I lived in California and we were warned of avoiding certain public lands where illegal growers were known to operate, let alone at least one homeowner I knew whose rental property was entirely trashed by 'renters' who used it's suburban low key location next to an elementary school as an ideal location for a 2000 sq. foot grow room:sad2:

Is hydroponics a big thing with marijuana growers? I've never heard it associated with anything other than growing vegetables and fruits :confused3

I'd really like to try hydroponic gardening, but I believe it's pretty expensive and I'm not sure if I have the space. I love Living with the Land, and I'd love to do the Behind the Seeds tour one day! :goodvibes

Again have no interest in marijuana. Interested in growing vegetables and don't have much space to do it in. Can we stay on that? What got my attention was someone using a six foot fence post stuck into a 5 gallon bucket. They got 20 strawberry plants on it. Now that's a lot of strawberries in a small space.

I just watched a youtube video about a six foot high fence post in a 5 gallon bucket. It can hold about 20 pods. That's small.

Here's a video

That is very cool. I just live in an apartment so all I have is a small patio (and no hose). I just looked up some more videos and there's a Ted Talk about growing in an apartment, so I'll do some more research when I have the time :)

My husband and I have a little setup in the house for growing/starting veggies early. It's a sterlite five shelf shelving unit. We have it split for two shelves.
There are two, 2 foot, 4 bulb T5 lights. I use soil for my seeds and when I move them to the greenhouse my husband starts his hydroponics.

He did some research online and found and inexpensive way to start. Basically he got a big plastic container that hold 10-15 gallons, and cut out 6 holes in the lid. He bought net pots and hollow clay beads, (hydroton), then he put the seeds in rock wool, and lastly he had a fish tank bubbler to make the water splash on the roots. Sounds complicated but really it's not. He got most of his info on you tube.

We grow simple things. Basil turned out well and lettuce. We had a ton of lettuce. We didn't do any fruits or veggies that need to flower before the veggie grows because that requires a special light. (bloom light) If you are doing this outside then no lights needed and try anything!

Hope this helped! :)
