Husband is reluctant to cruise...

Livinadream....you will be fine I'm sure. DW had knee replacement last June and was on a ship in September--she was slow but did just fine. Good luck with your healing.

DH was once not interested in cruising at all. ever.
We had a trip to WDW planned for our Christmas w/ DS (2 1/2 at time) in early Dec 2011, had some extra vacay days to add to end of WDW park adventures so I suggested (and sugar coated it with it is our anniversary and my birthday celebration) we look at a cheap Bahamas cruise on any cruise line. He wasnt thrilled but said I could look into it. As I was researching, I found a fantastic VGT rate (this was 41 days before sailing!) on the 3 nt. Dream and I talked him into it! The minute we arrived at the terminal he was hooked! Turns out 3 nights wasnt near enough so we had to do a ditto and booked great VGT rate again, 53 days prior to sailing, for a 7 night Western on the Fantasy in Dec. 2012 ! He loved it so much that we are now watching for VGT to try the Eastern Fantasy in late November! Seems we have now made a Christmas tradition with DCL :beach:
I have a feeling Alaska will be next, maybe in the hot Ohio summer months we will get to sail Alaska with DCL :tink:

My wife had the same fears. This might even be taboo here but we are not Disney people. What drew us to trying this was the stories of the quality of service. Boy they were so right. We never really got bored unless we wanted to be bored. The Navigators are filled with stuff to do. I think it is a very good idea you start with a 4 days to see if you are cruise people.

We are going on our 3 DCL in 60 days. And we are starting to become Disney people....although we still love Universal Studios :thumbsup2

That was me. Have been doing WDW since my oldest nephew was born. Love the trips but as the boys got older WDW got boring and they begged to cruise.
Sis & BIL had done 2 prev cruises and hated it but were willing ti give it a shot. As this was going to replace our annual trip they invited me & our mom to join them. Took alot of arm twisting to get me (single 37 yr old guy ) to agree to go. All the usual complaints-
To many kids, nothing to do as an adult, food going to be terrible etc.
By the time ae finished dinner on the first night I was hooked. We have since done 2 more cruises & have another booked for next Aug and I actually booked two solo cruises on NCL. I think if he's as big a fan as WDW as you say he will be a fan a DCL by the end of your trip.

This was my entire family. I had always wanted to try a Disney cruise, kind of a bucket list type of thing but no one else in my group was interested. We were planning a trip to Disney World when a Kids Sail Free deal came up on DCL and we decided to just give it a try. My husband was really not enthused and my kids were certain we would be bored. Less than 24 hours into our 8 night cruise the kids were saying it was the "best vacation ever!" and asking when we could go again. When we were unable to dock at CC my husband said "Oh well, we'll just have to book another cruise and try again." (He has never, ever, in the entire time I have known him suggested or asked about travel. That was literally the first time I had ever heard him suggest a vacation.) Before we got off the ship we had booked a two week Panama Canal cruise and shortly after getting home we booked another cruise for a couple of months from now.

I don't know if Disney puts something in their chicken fingers or what but just one cruise was all it took for us to become hard core DCL addicts. pirate:

So, my hubby is really not looking forward to our cruise. We have a 4-night Bahamas cruise on the Dream, followed by 4 nights at WDW.

He LOVES going to WDW and we try and make sure we get there once a year...the cruise will be our first, but for some reason, he is not excited. Last night he said he can't wait for that part to be over so he can get to the "real" vacation.

He has never been on any cruise before, so he thinks he'll feel trapped and stuck on the boat.

I'm looking for some encouraging stories from people that weren't too excited to go but ended up loving it...please tell me they're out there!

If he loves WDW then he will likely love the cruise. Just seeing the ship for the first time is an experience on its own. I am sure that he will have a great time once on board and just be sure to take full advantage of all the ship has to offer.

Half way through our first day on board DH went from unenthusiastic to head over heels. We went to WDW for our honeymoon before cruising it was his favorite vacation. Now it's DCL or nothing.

A very timely post as we are at our two week mark before our first ever Disney cruise. DH was very reluctant to book but DD (age 11) and I talked him into it. I really really hope he loves it and will agree to book a 7 night while onboard. Any pixie dust would be GREATLY appreciated. LOL

You guys rock...I am starting to feel so much better about "dragging" DH onto the boat!!!;)[/QUOTE

Seriously most people find that they and their family actually like it more than a trip to WDW. I believe one reason is there is still a ton of activities for everyone to enjoy but the atmosphere is sooo relaxed that there is no way you will attack it commando style. We agree that 3 or 4 nighters just wet your whistle and you definitely will be wanting More More More. Be forewarned they are very addictive and you will find yourself having multiple sailings booked before you know it. Welcome aboard fellow LEMMING :rotfl2:

Twinkie is hoping for a similar reaction in May! Her honey did a 7 day CCL with us in 08 on the oldest (but very charming) ship in their fleet Holiday. There was nothing to do but eat. After our 3 day, Twinkie thought she might convince him to try the 4 day with Disney. When our coupon came, we booked him. He found out about it, but by then I had already scheduled last week's Seattle trip out to see him, in hopes that he would come with us in May. He is grumbling about it, but so far, he's still going!!! We are really hoping that he sees how different it is. He is the kinda guy that laughs at Wall-E and will watch Tangled etc and has been to WDW, so I'm hopeful. He doesn't like hot weather, and though I asked Twinkie about Alaska (the ONLY way I would EVER consider Alaska is on DCL...cuz I hate cold and at least the cruise would be interesting) but she didn't want to give up her caribbean fish, so back to PC we go! If he doesn't like this one, I have a feeling we won't ever be able to convince him to cruise again...

**In baby Tiana voice "please please please please"** :worried:

I wanted to cruise (he wasn't interested). He wanted to go to Bermuda (I wasn't interested). So, in 1996, we compromised and did a Celebrity cruise from NYC to Bermuda. Even with rough waters after Hurricane Bertha came up the coast, he enjoyed it. Our DD arrived the following year, so big vacations got put on hold. Fast forward to 2007 - hubby decides to book 7-night DCL Western Caribbean. The rest is history. Joined DVC on board, have completed 7 cruises with 3 more booked and are anxiously awaiting the release of the 2015 itineraries!

Your husband describes me exactly. When we go away I like to explore. I have often taken a day to myself when we are away just to drive around and explore the area. We are also big WDW people. 30+ trips over the last 30 years. We went on our first cruise in April 2012 on the 4 day Dream. WE LOVED IT(INCLUDING ME) So much so we are going again in October and doing a Dream and WDW combo.

Tell your husband he should try it. The ship is huge and between the ship and the stops at Nassau and CC there are plenty of things to keep you occupied, or you can do nothing at all and just relax.

My DH and I cruised on the Dream September 1-5, followed by 4 nights at the Poly. Keep in mind, for us a yearly visit to WDW is a must. My DH was a little leary because of his experience on Carnival. It was my 1st cruise and I couldn't understand how I would like being on a ship in the middle of the ocean and figured I would enjoy the resort part of our trip much better. Well, we both ended up absolutely loving the cruise, more so than our visit to WDW. We have our cruise for next year booked and I'm trying to work in an extra cruise for next year. Everything was wonderful on the cruise!!!!

One word of advice I forgot to add, try to change your resort stay so that you are there before the cruise. Most everyone suggested that on the disboards but DH and I did the resort stay after the cruise but it would have been so much better if we had done the resort stay before the cruise. Reason being, the cruise is so much cleaner and nicer and the staff offer more personalized service so going to the resort was almost kind of a let down.

My father was a 50 year sailor, 25 years in the US Navy with most of it on ship, after he retired from the Navy he worked for NASA/Air Force/RCA tracking missiles on ships that roamed the Atlantic or Pacific. When he retired the second time he said NO CRUISES FOR ME! For my parents 55th wedding anniversary we insisted that Dad go on a Disney cruise with the rest of the family. After a great deal of pressure, he said he would go. He never said anything, but we all knew he was not going to be happy on the cruise. We forced him to do some of the things we did as a family, dress up, family pictures, Paolo for brunch, spa time, movies on the deck, deck parties, first run movies in the theatre and the shows. We had a great time, and dad never said a word about what we did during the cruise. As we were getting off the cruise and we were all sad, Dad reached over to us girls and said I had a great time, when are we going again? We have not been able to afford every year since, but we are celebrating their 66th anniversary on a Nov cruise on the Dream. I understand from mom he is already packed with everything but his day to day meds. He even has his toiletries packed! And as it is 7 weeks til cruise time he has a long wait!:cool1:

:goodvibes

While he had nothing like your dad's experiences, DH worked on oil tankers for a few years up in Alaska. He gave it up because he didn't want to be gone half the time like his dad had been (Navy, Merchant Marines, then his own shipping business, then working with those big grey military *support* ships you see in big ports where he lived in San Francisco with the family in WA), but he LOVED being on the water. So he jumped at cruising. And he loves it, even though the water isn't anywhere near as big as he was used to. :goodvibes

I imagine if you were in the Navy, the luxury takes some time to get used to, along with not being ordered to wake up really early and work! (though maybe your busy itinerary kept dad somewhat happy?)
