Hurricanes and spoiled holidays!!

Right. I need some opinions now.

We've had a few holidays disrupted or blown away by hurricanes and their associated bad weather fronts. We were in Orlando last October and saw the sun once, for about twenty minutes.

I promised myself that I wouldn't book anything until the last minute this year as we're off for the last week in September. I can now get flight and car from the local airport for about £250each, which added to a dirt-cheap timeshare latebreak adds up to a very cheap week.

Do I risk it or wait? If I book and the weather's bad I'll never hear the end of it from DW, but if I wait the flight might fill and costs go up, or fill completely and we have to travel to Manchester

Hi, I would go for it. Having experienced Florida weather I know what you mean, but it all seems to have been much better this year so far with a lack of hurricanes - unless they are waiting for you to book

In September 2004, hurrican Katrina, we had our entire holiday cancelled the day before we were supposed to fly out. Just one of those things, we just changed our holiday to Californa the same day and flew out 10 hours after completeing the booking!

I'm not that brave though! Tammy last year, Frances and Ivan the year before that. I've been looking on the Hurricane advisory centre site, (thanks Obi Wan), and there's usually a five or six day track for any in the area. That should give me enough time to find a flight. I think I'm going to leave it for now.

So YOU are the person who's had even more bad luck with Florida weather than me over the past few years then

I did Frances in 04, 2 weeks May/June last year with hardly any sun and record rain fall and then a tropical storm during a week's holiday at Hilton Head SC last October, so you have my complete understanding

The last 3 years we have been to Florida we have had our holiday affected in someway by a hurricane. Its just one of those things, they can come in really quickly with only a few days warning or they can spend days building up and "threatening" to become a major hurricane just to blow out in the sea or change course.

They always predict hurricanes in sept/oct its probably the worst time of year for them.
Personally i would book it, even if there isnt a hurricane you can still get bad weather! cloudy, rain etc.

I am a bit lost with this, what dates did you go for? I was there for the 8th to the 28th and there was one evening of rain before Hurricane Wilma struck and what i would have described as a windy day in Wales as it passed through over 200 miles away from Naples to Miami. Apart from that the weather was truly gorgeous and warm up to and alot cooler for 2 days (But still sunny) after the hurricane. It then got back up to temperature just as we were leaving.

Graeme if you are that unlucky with the weather can you go a different week please as we will be there then!! Sorry just kidding. We have been a few times and can count the rainy days we have had on one hand so some of our luck with weather may rub off on you go for it.

I am a bit lost with this, what dates did you go for? I was there for the 8th to the 28th

1st to the 8th. Apparently it was blazing the week before as well! Oh and it was sunny the day we got there, but we were dressed in jeans and travelling gear.

It probably wasn't as bad as twenty minutes but every time we sat round the pool it was overcast.

I wouldn't worry if it's your first time, you wont notice if it's sunny or not. The theme parks are easier with a bit of cloud and the odd downpour. We're planning on a week round the pool with intermittent Wendy's and Ben and Jerry's

That's why good weather is a major factor for us. Apart from IOA we probably wont be going to the parks.

I am planning on hitting every theme park so rain which drives the crowds away is a good thing.

We caught Jeanne in 2004,we were in Epcot when they announced that the parl was closing at 5:00,not a cloud in the sky!! We were confined to the hotel for 48 hours then everything was back to normal. We've had a couple of complete washouts but we always seem to end up going back!!

We were in Orlando when 'Charley' came right through in August a couple of years ago. I suppose it lost us about a day in total as everything pretty much closed at lunchtime on hurricane day (it hit about 9-10pm) but was all open again by lunchtime the next day. It was a bit hairy for a couple of days after as there were loads of fallen trees to navigate round and the lights had blown down on loads of intersections so driving was interesting to say the least. I look on it as something to tell the grandkids
