Hurricane??

So, by the looks of the model or path, do you think we can sail on Monday? How about getting to Nassau on MOnday? I guess I really wouldn't mind if we didn't go to Nassau, but I have a dolphin swim booked at Atlantis for my DD (10). We have had this trip booked and planned for two years!! Now this~ I know she would be really disappointed and it's non-refundable. Oh well. So, what do you all think?

Not ALL of us. We arrive next Saturday.

I wouldn't be worried if we weren't staying in Disney for 6 days. If we were on the ship, we would be fine. But we can't exactly move WDW to another location.

So things to do in Walt Disney World during a hurricane. Do they ever shut Disney down for buckets of rain?

Disney does it's best to take care of its guests in those situations. Yes, the parks have closed in the past - most notably 2004 with Charley, Frances, and Jeanne.

But it's really not that bad, since we're inland - we get spared from a lot of the worst. Charley hit Orlando as a cat 2, and it was fairly nasty, but we were at Epcot the next day (since they had air conditioning and hot food, and we didn't at home!)

Best of luck with your trip. I'm in Houston and watching Gustav.
Two sites I use are the National Hurricane Center and the computer
models on Weather Underground. Hannah looks like she is heading
South to the Bahamas and should miss Florida, and Gustav is going
somewhere between New Orleans and Corpus Christi.
You never can tell which way a hurricane is going to go, they turn
every which direction. If you look at the models and they are all heading
in the same direction, then it will probably go that way, if they are all
pointing in different directions, then no one has any idea, and check back
the next day.

Hey, your whole trip could be screwed like ours is! Wer cruise 9/1 so Hanna will likely mess up our ports of call and make us sea sick if the water is rockin...then on 9/6 when we get off the ship we are supposed to be at WDW until the 10th. By then Hanna will have followed me inland to poo poo all over my parade.

Oh yeah, and Gustav is about to hit where I live and they are talking contra-flow for the interstates starting tomorrow. We may not be able to drive to FL without going to TN first.

Gustav probably will not impact the Wonder. I would keep a careful eye on Hanna.

As a former travel professional I have always said a cruise is the PERFECT tropical vacation destination during hurricane season. It will just go....somewhere else!

Years ago I was vacationing at the Wildie while I had guests of 3 ships heading for Bermuda. Well....so was hurricane Floyd. Two ships did a Canada/New England cruise and one did a goofy cruise to nassau, port canaveral (it had departed from NYC) and back to NY. The nassau/pt. canaveral passengers were given 25% discount cruise vouchers for another trip.

Be prepared, however, for possible changes in schedule or embarkation ports.


You may not cruise where you originally planned....but you WILL cruise....somewhere.

Don't forget, you are cruising on Disney - it will still be fun!

We rode out Charlie in 2004(?) at Old Key West. How Disney handled and prepared for the storm was amazing. The stopped serving in the restaurant right before dinner so we bought Ham, cheese, mustard, bread and baked lays for dinner. WDW had work crews in each of the resorts to take care of any immediate damage, and to get an early start the next morning. We had to take our patio furniture inside, but room service dropped off a flashlight in each room. We rode out the storm hardly noticing anything except a slight breeze coming across the room (door to sliding door). We watched Disney movies all night long, had ham and cheese sandwiches, and wine. Slept and when we woke up the next morning, it was clear, all the roads on property had been cleared off, and it was business as usual.

We were on the Magic in September, 2004 after Charley and Frances. Our itinerary was changed twice because of Ivan & Jeanne. We were on a 'Western' that was rerouted to Puerto Rico and St. Thomas because Hurricane Ivan headed west. Then we were rerouted again to Nassau after Puerto Rico because Jeanne was headed for St. Thomas.
We had a great time, no rough weather and plenty to do.
So don't worry DCL will get you on board and you will have a great time! Keep watching the DCL website and these boards. This board got me through the pre cruise "will we leave? where will we be going? and what hurricanes will be out there?" jitters. As a matter of fact several folks from this board took my cell phone number and kept me updated about the Radisson at the port where we were booked to stay the night before. They were open and we stayed there with lots of FEMA folks who were trying to help out the locals after Frances had hit.

Never fear Disney has a plan. They also learn what works and what doesn't and want to keep everyone safe and get back to business as soon as possible.
[They even paid their staff at the Vero Beach resort and helped with emergency plans when the resort had to close in September, 2004 due to the hurricane damage.]

AND we have to deal with rumors. A friend of mine on another board just emailed me to say she heard that DIsney was cancelling ALL September cruises.

Um, yeah, that's a rumor. I can't find any info to back it up.

I will be happy when I am sitting on the deck drinking a froo froo drink.

This is a good site to check how high the seas are off Pt Canaveral/how rough your trip might be (especially with storms in the area). Scroll down to look at the "Conditions" section where it shows "wave height" :

Right now if you click on the graph icon beside the wave height you can see how it has gone from 3 foot seas up to 10+ foot because of Hurricane Hanna.

I always like to check because I get really motion sick and like to be prepared for any rough seas, so I thought some of you getting ready to go would too. BTW I take Bonine and have been through many storms with absolutely no problems

in ref to what to do at disney during hurricane......stay dry! LOL, seriously, it is the best time, after the storms have passed they parks are empty. They do a great job of making them look like there was never a storm. If it looks like a rainy day, we head to disneyquest. We then make the ever important stops at Earl of Sandwich, and Ghiridelli (sp) ice cream shop....yummy! Either way, you'll have a great time.
