Idf anyone can spare some good wishes, please send them to my daugher, she is right in the way, meant to be leaving late on saturday from Palm Beach Internaional, so it is a matter of time, whether she gets out before the flights are stopped :( At this point there is nothing we can do and the airline wil not allow he to brihng the flight forward.

It is now the stirngest cat 5 they have on record as well as with the lowest pressures, but hopefully, and according to the forecasts it is expected to reduce in severiety, so I am prayeing for all those in the path, and also that is reeuced a lot and allows so that mmy daughter has time to get out.

I was just watching the news conference of the head of the hurricane center and he said that at this point (although of course things can change) the areas of florida that are major danger are the southern gulf coast and the florida keys....he said the atlantic coast would experience a "wind event"...

At the moment on the west coast (Palm beach) they are expecting the winds to be about 80 miles per hour when it hits, butnthids might change, as with all things to do with hurricanes.

You must feel really anxious right now - it's so hard to predict what will happen - you look where the hurricane is right now, and it's projected path over the next 3 days, but it could so easily take another turn at any time. It's a case of crossing everything I think, and just hoping and praying for the best.

Here's some pixie dust from me :wizard: .

I am nervous, but not too worried, if that makes sense, I know she is safe (house built with withstand cat 4 etc), I know it will weaken when it hits land, but she has never been through a hurricane and even though she is 18 she is my little girl.

The flight to bring her home is meant to be late on saturday, so it really depends on what happens with the size of the storm and the stregth of the winds and how much it speeds up and also when the airline decicde to stop flights for if she leaves just before or just after.

i thought that Palm Beach is on the East Coast (Atlantic Coast) of Florida..
both Palm Beach and West Palm Beach are on the Atlantic Coast..
unless perhaps there another palm beach on the west coast (gulf coast) of florida i'm not familiar with...

Sorry yes, it is east, got my east and west mixed up, The west coast is expecting it much worse though, (hence the annoucment for tourists to evacuate the florida keys area). The east coast is expecting winds of about 80 mph (that bit was right).

well maybe the storm will weaken before it hits florida.......that would be a good thing...

the head of the hurricane center kept emphasizing that the keys are in major danger.....with massive storm surges and huge waves (he talked about 35 to 50 foot waves!!)....assuming the storm stays on its current track and strength...i guess they'll probably evacuate them.....

i'm looking at Obi's map...it looks like Cuba's going to be smacked pretty hard...it's funny (not funny - ha ha - funny curious)....growing up in america, the maps NEVER ever ever ever had Cuba included.....so looking at that map i'm amazed at how big cuba is...(not to mention how close it is to florida...though of course i know that it's only 90 miles away....but when it was never on a map, it's something that i don't tend to visualize....i still have all those maps....funny how they censored our maps that way...

If you look at the map at the top of the page, the keys are just to the right of the words SAT 8am, right in the path, but the winds also cover central Florida as well :-(
At 175 MPH and a fast moving storm at that, its going to cause BIG trouble in Kissimmee/Orlando!

yes i was just looking at your map again (i edited my post just before yours)...
well maybe it won't be too bad in orlando...the head of the hurricane center didn't mention other parts of florida...just the keys and the southwest coast...
oh and he said that new england might get a blast as well....since it's such a fast moving storm, it could fly up and smack into new england....

hmmmm.....as i look at it again now, it seems the track has moved a bit north...like it's hitting a bit further north on the florida west coast then the last time i looked at the track.....is that true?

it looks like it's moving even faster and moving slightly to the north...
i would imagine that WDW will already start taking action on thursday (moving people out of FW, carting away anything that's not anchored down, etc etc.)...
it takes them at least a full day to do everything they need to do to batten down the hatches....i don't think they can wait until friday to do that...

/QUOTE]

Or possibly the remnants into "Old" England as well... :confused3

looking at the latest update of your map, it seems she's slowing down....in the earlier tracks she was hitting florida at 8 AM satarday....now the forecasted track has her still in the gulf at 8 PM saturday......so is slowing down considered a good thing?....
i just heard on the radio that she's down to a category 4.....of course that's still a very powerful hurricane, but better than a 5....

It all depends, a fast moving storm is through and away, but a slow one hangs around longer, causing more damage, so its a bit of a trade off, either fast moving with short period of damage or a slower less intense strom, but hanging around for longer

My thoughts are with every one out there i have freinds that went out this morning but this storm is all over the place and it path is changing all the time i have CNN on now and the latest is it my turn more sharply and miss florida all together but with this storm who can tell we all need to hope and pray that our freinds and familys are ok.

And remember thay know how to deal with this sort of thing and there are plenty of shelters if need.

We are due to fly to Florida on Saturday. Staying in Kissimmee area. We have to ring the Foreign office this afternoon for their advice. They did say it was slowing down and changing direction.

Looking at the latest track, she has moved a little onto the Yuckatan (sp?) peninsular so that will slow her down a bit and Fla landfall has been delayed.
