Hurricane Watchers--Post Here!

Sorry but I don't agree with you at all. I will continue to watch and make my own assessment as to what my family needs. We will be at Disney and we will be fine. Like I said, I will go to the food court at our resort and get what my family needs. We will be dodging rain I'm sure. Are you a weather person? Are you even qualified to be making these bold statements on here telling people what they should and shouldn't do? Stop trying to scare people who are already on edge as it is. Unless you are some kind of weather professional/expert, back off!

I lived in Fl for 20 some years, worked as a critical nurse with the red cross. you get a lot of hurricanes up there in MI do ya? its whatever, do your own thing... just trying to give accurate info to those who care to listen, your certainly free to do your own thing.. really, no need to get testy,:rotfl2:

I appreciate your information here based on your experience. If we're talking SNOW, now I could probably give some information about what to expect in a blizzard (having experienced more than a few of those), but hurricanes? I got no idea .....

that's not a bold statement at all, look at the size of the storm, the amount of geography it covers... if its in cuba , its raining in Orlando.. its a fact. look at the size of the storm, but you go ahead and pray to your imaginary friend as that worked so well for the folks in New Orleans, new Jersey, vermont , fl many many times.... you people and that paryer stuff are offensive at times... it proves no point you know.

Rain in Florida? Oh noes! :scared1:

The salient point is whether it will be a tropical event of any severity in Orlando. The answer is it is too soon to tell. Be prepared yes, but don't expect Katrina out of this and citing that example only alarms the out-of-towners.

Hi all.

This is my first post in the forum (been reading through for some time to get valuable information). I never thought my first post would be in a Hurricane thread. Like all of you we are watching the weather situation carefully and I am going to get some decent rain gear to pack before we leave.

This will be my second trip to Disney for me (first back in 1982) and my wife (late 80s) and first for my son (11 y.o.). We are concerned of course about the turn the weather forecast has taken, but will make the best of any situation and have a good time. At least we don't have to worry about flight cancellations, we are taking the train (Amtrak Silver Star) from NYC down to Kissimmee. We leave Penn Station in NY at 11:00 AM and arrive Sunday morning some 23-24 hours later.

Does anyone know of or recommend a good shuttle service to get use from the train station in Kissimmee to the magic Kingdom?

I'd check out the Transportation forum here on DIS. They have a pretty good handle on anything that flies, drives, rolls, crawls, etc. around the Orlando area.

It's 15 miles from the train station to the entrance to Disney. To the MK it's a little longer. You could take a taxi. Probably the quickest as they are usually waiting at the station ready to go.

I grew up in Chicago... you know, I turned into a weather nerd living and working in the emergency center for all those years, I love weather, but I gotta tell ya, those winter storms are SO confusing! I try, and the kids on the weather forums try and teach but remain useless when it comes to those clipper systems ...
hurricanes are easy, comparatively. If there is not something pushing or pulling at it it's going to go where it wants to go, ll this path prediction is educated guessing really on this one, the computer models are honing in on it ow, up until about tuesday then, not so much.. I am happy this is not a strong storm and I doubt it will be but there will be a bit of road flooding and such, so good to have few things in for a day or so that's all. It will be an adventure, nothing like the big storms with all kinds of damage.
best bet is to keep an eye on what they do with the convention.

Welcome to the Dis! I hope your son has a great first trip.

I don't have a recommendation on a shuttle, but I would recommend checking on the Transportation board. I am positive you will find something on there. Your best bet may possibly be a Mears taxi. If you go on their website you can get a free quote on your estimated cab fare.

Been reading and watching the news on this today and it looks like it will thankfully not be a big one. Strong winds and rain look like will ht Tampa area. WDW should not be affected much if it stays a category1.:surfweb:

You know, most of us can't just change our airline reservations at thedrop of a hat or change our hotel reservations. If we don't get out Tuesday morning, we'll be at the mercy of the airlines to get us there. Telling people they're screwed if they don't get out by Sunday morning might be accurate--even the real weather people wouldn't make that type of statement at this point-- but for those of us who really can't do anything about it, it's just disheartening--and possibly inaccurate-- to read. I don't care if we have rain--I'm just praying our flight takes off.
And I've also lived in Florida, plus nearly every other area of the US!(Retired military spouse) I'm not concerned that Disney will lose its power in a possible category 1 storm.

We are going on Sunday too. Our flight is at 8:30am. I hope we both make it there! Once I get there I'm not too stressed but will be overwhelmed if the flight gets cancelled. Signed me....stressed out!

another Sunday arrival here....our flight is set to arrive at MCO at 9:50 am so I hope we're alright getting there before any bad weather forces a shutdown of MCO. Keeping fingers crossed!! I looked to see if we could change our flight to Saturday night instead, but last flight om Saturday is 3:00 in the afternoon and there's no way we can get on that flight. We're stuck taking our chances on Sunday morning:worried:

this storm is no where close to a KAtrina... not even in the same town, let alone ball park...

any of you worried about flights on sunday, I would call the airlines and as, many times when weather is invloved they are thrilled to change your flight, at no extra charge, just to get you out of their hair the day of the weather event... FYI...

This. I know Jetblue was already offering no change fees for people in the Caribbean so they will offer the same when and if US flights are affected. Get an idea of what you'd like to switch to and call them to find out. It will likely be that they won't offer you a change without fees until they are more certain of landfall predictions but be prepared to switch.

Thanks for all the suggestions to post in the Transportation forum - I'll go do that.

I wish all of you flying down well. I hope your flights are not affected by the weather.

I am really glad that my wife insisted on taking the train down. Not only do we get a new experience and part of an adventure for our trip, but hopefully our mode of transport is more resistant to weather extremes ;)

I sure hope so. Thanks for posting this though. Some of these other posts were really freaking me out! We fly out tomorrow morning and I have no option to change this trip.

BadgerGirl - just had to comment that when you started this thread, I posted right away that OF COURSE, I wasn't going to check on this storm and worry about it or anything! And now I'm finding all this information very helpful as I obsessively read every post as we get closer and closer to our Sunday 7:00 a.m. departure! I have become my mother ....... she's the kind of person who watches the Weather Channel all day and then calls me to let me know it's raining in Tennessee.

I wonder if we are long lost siblings! :rotfl: I think we have the same mother. I live in Western NY, and my mother once called me collect from her trip in Mexico to let me know that we had a snow storm coming and perhaps I should stay home from work! My response to her was "You are in Mexico mom! How are you getting this information?" Her reply was, "they do have the weather channel in Mexico dear!". That was an interesting $50 phone call! :)

Folks the purpose of this thread is to discuss hurricanes in relation to Orlando.
Please continue to post on the thread will you eye to respecting the DISboard guidelines.

wow, lets not take things and twist them, or put a intense spin on things.. I like accurate as opposed to extreme on either end... I think everyone has been very clear that if Disney loses power it would be for a very short time...
this storm is no big deal, people have asked about flights, I can tell you they will not be getting in at the height of this thing it could delay a day, could be a few hours there is NO way to know, if you have the option change it, or call the airlines for options... so calm down, they aren't even canceling the GOP convention,,, its alright you might have to spend a bit of time in your room, you might not... its rain, its fl. it rains every day...
thank you for your service.

Re: calling the airlines about rescheduling. Delta has a travel advisory for the Caribbean with the option to reschedule flights, but I haven't seen anything updated for the US flights. I think I'll give a call just to see what they have to say about changing flights and post here once I get some information.
