VA too. Traffic around here (central VA) has been nuts today and gas station lines are crazy!

I went and got gas and a few groceries about 7:30 this AM and then was out and about this afternoon and it's like holiday traffic around here. We filled our gas cans and tested the generator last night. I'm just thankful that if we do lose power, we won't be sweating to death like we were this summer when we lost power for 3 days at the end of June during the spring storms. It'll be an inconvenience for sure, but at least with comfortable temps.

DH cancelled his trip to NY (he was supposed to leave Sunday and come back Tuesday). I am very happy.

I sent my son out for propane and gas. He said there were lines. We'll test the generator tonight when my husband gets home - used it for a week last year, so thankful to have it.

I went to the supermarket so we are as prepared as we can be. Just going to clean the gutters out again all these leaves falling and we're in the woods. Our basement and garage flooded during those June storms, hoping that doesn't happen again.

The kids are pretty sure school will close Monday.

Are they now saying it will make landfall in NJ?

I haven't gotten to the store but I'm planning to go after I drop my DD and her friends off at the Homecoming game. Let's hope there is something left

I think I'll treat myself to a nice steak dinner. Hope all the forecasters are wrong and it's not as bad as they are calling for. Everyone stay safe.

Half of my county is barrier Islands, which are under mandatory Evac by Sun. I am a bit more inland (by about 10-12 miles) so we plan on staying put.

I just don't want this to affect our planned departure for WDW on Wednesday afternoon.

Don't under estimate the tidal surge. Although I have lived in hurricane country all my life, I have been surprised about how water can be pushed up into streams and rivers and bayous and affect people miles inland from the shore.

I live 11 miles inland and the storm surge into rivers and streams can flood people well inland, too. If I have heard reports correctly, they say the storm surge will come about the same time as mean high tide--not good. That's what happened here in Katrina.

This is why our home owner's insurance is outrageous and there has been a push for people not in flood zones to get flood insurance.

Yes....gutters cleaned, storm windows put in, extra baby supplies and bought a generator.
Tomorrow all the fall decorations in and the flag.

I think I'm ready. I have bread, milk, eggs, non perishable food, batteries, flashlights, candles, bottled water, gas tank is full, cash on hand, laundry caught up, random stuff from yard picked up and put away in the garage.

I'll need to clear the gutters again on Sunday right before the rain starts, but that needs to wait until the last minute because our oaks are still dropping leaves. I cleared them earlier today, and I see that they need it already

I'm going to do some baking tomorrow night or Sunday morning so that I've got plenty of snacks to keep the kids occupied, and I still have to make sure that all the electronics are fully charged.

But tomorrow, when things are going to get really crazy, I don't need to step inside a store.

If you are on public utilities, toilets flush just fine during a power outage. Water still flows through the pipes, your toilet does not run on electricity. If you have a gas stove, you can light it with a match to cook.

If you have a private water well, than yes, your toilet will probably only flush once during an outage.

After the big earthquake in Chile in 2010, we lost electricity for four days, but we lost water after the first day. Although our water was gravity-fed, there was no power at the municipal water tower so the tanks could not be refilled. I'm sure that during a storm the tanks would last much longer than ours did (lots of water was lost due to broken water mains), but if the power is out for several days it wouldn't be inconceivable that the tanks could run dry. It's always a good idea to have a back-up supply of water, and it's easy to drain it if you don't need it afterwards!
