Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

Our flight home Saturday on SWA was cancelled. By the time I received the text, every flight is sold out until Monday.

I went to the Beach Club front desk who told me everything was sold out and I couldn't book a room anywhere on property until "they see how things are" tomorrow. So I booked a room at Pop myself (online) for Saturday-Monday. Now wondering if we will be able to get transportation to Pop on Saturday??

I feel so lost. I feel like I let my family down. I wish we had rented a car and driven home this morning. I thought about renting one right now and driving home to TN tonight. Most places are sold out from MCO. The ones I found are nearly $500. Is it too late to evacuate??

Everyone's flight has been cancelled. You are not alone. I am here with my daughter and our flight tomorrow was cancelled and we can't get out until Monday. I talked with the front desk yesterday and they said if we can't get out, people can't get in. They will find somewhere for everyone.

Yes, it is too late to evacuate. I have been in hurricanes, as far inland as 3 hours with significant damage, you should not be on the roads.

You should stay put and call Disney letting them know you won't be there tomorrow and ask for a refund for the night. It will not be safe to drive and there will be nowhere safe to stop probably in all of Florida, since coastal residents have flooded into safe area hotels. You may need to do the same for Saturday if major highways become impassable, since it is unlikely any Florida hotels will be cleared out immediately.

That was our plan but there are no hotels south of Macon. We changed arrival to Saturday with no issue. We are also driving from TN and even worried about the drive after the storm passes.

KENNY THE PIRATE REPORTS:

If on the Dining Plan that lovely box lunch does indeed come with a drink................

Food Courts and Restaurants are closing soon. Grab and Go like lunch box only. Wondering if others will see different.

ALSO there will be minimal maybe no Mousekeeping tomorrow. Request extra towels NOW.
Clean towels while supplies last. SO hang your towels in anticipation of reusing them.

Some reports of cable out at resorts.

Beginning to ask guests to stay in rooms until they hear something,
probably no earlier than tomorrow afternoon.

Take a bus to one of the parks and then hop the PoP bus.

Kind of what I thought. Thanks. Still hoping roads might be where we can rent a car Sat or Sunday and drive home. It's about a 14 hr drive for us. But again, I don't even know if the roads will be passable

Thanks. I thought they might let us keep our room but I can't afford a few more nights here :(

I just wanted to get that out there in case you were actively looking for rentals. You didn't let your family down in the slightest. On the bright side, this is one trip none of you will ever forget. If you're family is anything like mine, you'll laugh over this for years to come. It's the trips where everything doesn't go according to plan that seem to make the greatest memories.

Agreed!!!! It's an adventure!!!! You've got the Pop ressie, so no matter what happens, you're covered. That's all you can do!

YOU did not let them down. Leave that out of this.

STAY PUT, even if you got a car the highways are bumper to bumper and gas is limited. You'd likely get stuck and never make it home tonight.

GO TO POP if they can't give you a room there, treat it like another adventure. When the storm passes wander there and AOA and get lots of great pictures ... later they will remember when we had to evacuate to POP Century, how lucky were we.

You get them your luggage asap and have them transfer it. Pack bathing suits or whatever in a backpack for rest of day. You use Disney transportation. Make FP+ for Saturday so if all is open you are ready.

Turn this around. The Matthew Adventure!!!!! :goodvibes

Thank you so much. You are a nice person. I felt better after reading this. I actually did make FP for Sunday (already had it for Saturday) we still have 2 days of park tickets..

Thank you. It helps to know we are not alone. And also to be told to stay put.

I guess I am picturing some post-apocalyptic situation happening and wondered if Disney buses or anything will be running Saturday.

I rode Charley out at Pop Century and it *was* an adventure! Can you ask the BC if they can drive you to Pop? Otherwise, I would take a cab or Uber.

You are probably safer where you are than on the highway on a regular day. The fear media is trying to get people off the east coast of Florida. I'm in the camp that Disney will have everything (most things) up on Saturday. This is a nasty hurricane. It's a bad scenario having a major hurricane buzz the east coast. The 2004 hurricane season was off the charts and Disney only had a few downed trees.

I don't mean to sound ignorant but don't know what storm surge means. Can someone give me a quick definition. Why is that serious?

It will be an awesome vacation, one you will be able to talk about for years to come. Stay put and stay safe. And yes I believe that the buses are housed on site so if the park is up and running so will the buses. Like others have said you just let the front desk know your luggage needs to go to another hotel and they will take care of it. I know cost is a huge point and POP is cheaper, that too will give your children something else to talk about. Family is number one, your health and safety is priority. Money comes and goes (goes really quick for me) And when you get home this will be something you will talk about for months, and in the yearly Christmas letter. Enjoy it knowing your will be safe and taken care of.

Storm surge is when the storm pushes the water out of a body of water. Usually rivers and the ocean. Not really a danger at WDW but on the coast of Florida it can and will cause damage. Most of the damage from Sandy was from the storm surges pushes salt water up and into areas that then cause electrical fires from wire corrosion.

These storms push massive amounts of water up on land and up river and into waterways. It has no where to go so it floods the coastal areas. It rushes in fast and it can be impossible to get away from it. This is where folks die because they are literally drowned by the ocean, in their house or wherever.

Best explanation.

This is a new site that you can see the predicted surge for this storm. Great for those of us that have property that might be damaged to see. If you look at say Daytona you can see how far in the water is expected to go.
