Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

As I read the posts with complaints about food, criticism about planning, etc., I can't help but think that if you have to be stuck somewhere Disney is a pretty good place to be stuck. Is $13 for subpar food ideal? No, but neither is a creepy roach motel on the interstate because that's all that was left.

Back to my popcorn eating and thread watching. popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::

We were able to order off the menu. Bummer for the people that did get the boxes since the food courts opened and they were not needed. But it just have easily gone the other way and people could have stuck in their room all day.

We had no choice but to ride out this hurricane, and I'm so glad that it was at Disney. I'm extremely doubtful that a park will open, but if one does, it would be amazing!

So its not false. I have heard from people there that they have been told to stay in their room. Staying in your room equals no food or water. From what I am reading, food courts and restaurants are open for business but the message you left in the room of the parents and 3 kids who are afraid to go out tells them to stay put. Kind of a mixed message dont you think?

I do not fall into that camp but I am sure there are alot of people staying at Disney resorts who take the instructions very literally and are afraid to open the door at this point. Lets hope they didnt listen to Shep Smith because everyone outside is dead...
What? You were given the option to get food last night. Rooms have running water so I don't see why you are saying that. If you didn't get food that's your own fault. Water is definitely not an issue.

Maybe you aren't getting the fact that not everyone knows what a hurricane is all about. Not sure where your from but I'm from Canada and hurricanes are pretty much unheard of. To most of us, we would think its a big wind storm with heavy rain. Buck up, its only water. I know that is what I was thinking when I was caught in Hurricane Kenna way back when in Mexico. I was very surprised at what a hurricane actually was. Also, to think that everyone on vacation is plugged in is wrong. We don't even watch tv when we are away so I would not only be unprepared but out in la la land with a hurricane warning.

As a pp said, if its a snow storm I'm ready. I know what to do and how to prepare. I would guess that there would be lots of people from down south who would think, 'Its just snow. Not going to stop me from going out to dinner'. I had more than a few guests who had that mind set.
Don't think badly of those of us who don't have the knowledge you do. It could be reversed. :flower3:
Do you not have TV? I live in Alberta... as far away from a hurricane zone as you can find. I guarantee you I know exactly what a hurricane can do. Catastrophic winds, storm surge, tornadoes....

Reports popping up on Facebook of cast being asked if they could possibly go in today for work. It was still very uncertain, but they are testing the waters for some sort of opening
Has the curfew been lifted? Because I'm sure some areas where CMs live won't be able to travel due to that. If you are out on roads during the curfew you can be arrested.

I guess all the meteorologists are all wrong. Maybe they should call you for your "expert" hurricane prediction

Annnnnd... downgraded to a 3 last evening, edging onshore today in a weakened state compared to 48 hours ago. Conditions in Orlando basically were equal to a strong tropical storm. So anyway yeah, I do know weather. Are you knowledgeable about anything? I sincerely bet you are. Would you like it if people assumed that you knew nothing about it? I bet you'd be annoyed. So, how in the heck do you know I am not a "weather expert" exactly? Peeking in my windows I presume? I'll look into getting better curtains.

You are quite a troll.

And by the way, I was right about everything I said. If I am wrong, I'll admit it, but data and satellite imagery suggested the storm was weakening SOMEWHAT ahead of predictions yesterday and I was simply adding to the discussion.

Oh, and I think I pretty CLEARLY stated this is STILL A DANGEROUS STORM and all evacuations and officials should absolutely be heeded.

I can't read all 70+ pages that have popped up since I was on this thread yesterday but I did scroll back through the last few. Yesterday tons of people were all upset that Disney hadn't officially closed yet and they were putting cast members in harm's way..and today I'm seeing complaints that a park isn't opening back up for the resort guests? Really? I had to postpone my trip a week, it was super stressful and disappointing, but I am not complaining. I am thankful Disney made the very best call they could to keep their guests and staff as safe as possible. You miss a park day. Get over it and be thankful you're actually at Disney instead of stuck at work like I am today, when I should be there. Geez.
Agree- Disney (and the weather folks) damned if it does, damned if it doesn't.

Should the power go out, your food will start to spoil soon. You can't use mayonnaise or spreads on sandwiches. In Miami for hurricanes, we're told to buy things like peanut butter that won't spoil. Do you expect burgers or chicken sandwiches? It ain't happening.
Lol peanut butter and canned tuna minus the mayo. We were told we might loose electric here on our side, Lee County. I got 2 large jars of peanut butter & 5 loaves of bread just in case. We didn't, so now I am freezing the bread lol

That's why you buy insurance. People think of insurance is for canceling the whole trip. It also covers if you have to stay longer, which could be an issue during hurricane season. It can also help if you get sick and have to stay longer.

Does insurance cover extras due to "Act of God"?

My sister-in-law and her family are at the Poly right now. Their pre-existing ADR for 'Ohana is not being honored tonight and instead they have the option to get in line for the buffet dinner that will be served there for Poly guests. Just an FYI for the poster wondering about her ADR -- looks like you'll need to make other plans.

Those going to work are exempt from the curfew
Unfortunately yes. Relatives in the medical field have been called in since the storm has been downgraded to relieve the nightwatch. There's another set on call for this evening until the entire watch is over.

This isn't a surprise - the teams of cast members left remaining at the resorts aren't equipped to cook and serve meals at that level. The last thing Disney needs is guests going to their ADRs at Ohana/Jiko/etc, and then complaining that the meal isn't what they were told it'd be/why did Disney make them pay for it, and any other complaint under the sun.

I'm sure this would be nice, but I'm guessing it is more to get the parks and resorts ready to function tomorrow. And to bring back full services at the resorts (mousekeeping and food service).
