Hurricane help for the next few months

If I've learned nothing else in the past week, I've realized that taking care of the hurricane refugees is going to be at the very least a months long process. This means that funds, supplies, etc are going to be needed for the long run, not just for the short run.

The response of Americans to the plight and immediate needs of their fellow citizens has, not suprisingly, been overwhelming. But we can't forget that the needs are going to be long term, and we should all do whatever we can, no matter how small, to continue to support these people in need.

DH and I talked this morning, and this is what we're going to do..

...our family (4) usually goes out for a nice dinner once a week. We're going to give up one of those and put the money we would have spent aside for hurricane donations.

...we're going to donate 10% of our monthly grocery budget for ongoing support efforts. I'll try to actually cut the 10% from out budget, but if I can't, I'll make it up somewhere else.

These donations won't be to the Red Cross, but rather to a specific shelter or charity where it will be used directly for ongoing relief efforts. We haven't decided which one yet, but it will most likely be something in the Biloxi, MS area.

I realize that my family is in a good position to do this, and not everyone can. But please, please, please consider doing whatever you can, no matter how little or how much, to continue to support these relief efforts. We can't let time diminish our determination to help these people.

Off my soapbox now. :)

I'm right there with ya Brenda. I'm going to do the same thing.

WOW! Good job!

We met a family in the Wal-Mart parking lot yesterday. We were there to by a birthday gift for a birthday party. They were taking a rental truck back to what was left of their home to salvage what they could. They were jobless and homeless. Instead of traveling with an empty truck--they were filling it with donations. So we did lots of shopping and helped them fill it. :)

Haven't figured out the rest of our assistance plan.

Awesome Brenda! Yes, this is a long term "relationship"...

It reminds me of how people are always there for someone after someone dies. The TRUE friends still come around weeks, months, years later, when they STILL need a shoulder. Take it from one who knows.

Excellent ideas! And a good reminder that this is a long-term scenario.

We have a shelter in our city. Right now there is a crush of volunteers to help at the shelter around the clock. Our city leaders are reminding people that the shelter will still be there weeks from now (though hopefully with a smaller population as people get settled in better housing) and that there will still need to be many volunteers down the road, as the initial rush to help fades.
We are donating supplies and money now and will then donate our time as days/weeks pass and new volunteers are needed.
