I read a post on another door asking if there were "Hurricane Doors" for the openings where the monorails come in and out of the contemporary, but no one seemed to know.
Was anyone there during the hurricane? Do you know if the do have doors and if they were closed in the openings for the monorail? If not , did it get windy inside the grand canyon concourse?

Hi,
I was in the CR tower during the hurricane and I have no idea, LOL. I do know there were 2 monorails 'parked' inside during the storm, but I never thought to look and see if there were doors... I can tell you that it wasn't windy at all (on the 10th floor above the monrails) and the concourse seemed very quiet, so I guess there must be some sort of barriers. If there weren't, I think there would have been broken glass because the windy was MIGHTY forceful that night...I dunno...

When the monorails are parked nose to nose in the Contemporary, they stick out just slightly on both sides, which act like a barrier for the air doors opening.

what happened to the red monorail? I saw on another thread before/during the hurricane someone's pics showed something that looked like smoke damage to the elevated line near the GF and it mentioned that it was done by the red monorail which was then out of service. (the rail was down then too)

Tyler, anyone? What happened?

There is no smoke damage, what you saw was the shadaw of the palm trees on the right. What he said was done by Red was gold being stoped at the GF. Notice that is the express loop not the resort. Red needed to be towed from the MK stop back to the roundhouse so all other monorails on that loop had to stop.

Oh! You're right!
Now that all makes sense. Thank you!

Red was experiencing some traction motor problems, and had to be towed. Just like when your car wont start, and you have to have it towed back. It's back in service. Really no big deal at all.

Does this mean that four trains are needed to fill the openings at both ends and for both beams?

My friend (who shall be referred to as ":jester: " only because I didn't ask his permission to write this) was at the Contemporary during the storm and being the kind of guy he is he had to sneak a peek despite the warnings.

He told his tale to myself pirate: and another DisBoard member" :Pinkbounc " about seeing the signs in the park being covered by netting and things (carts, etc.)being bolted/chained to the ground. He had us totally riveted as he spoke of the Disney services (Both Fun and Food) being in turn limited and then cancelled (At The Contemporary of all places & Yes, even the arcade was closed). Even with his detailed account of being in his Tower room, balcony doors/ windows flexing in the wind and watching the storm approach over the Magic Kingdom, the thing that blew us away was when he told us about sneaking out of his room only to see 4 monorails parked inside the Contemporary with the openings covered with plywood!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a loose transcript of what happened next:

pirate: : Wow!!! :earseek: , thats incredible!!! When are the pictures gonna be ready?!!

:jester: : What pictures?

:Pinkbounc : You know, the pics you took of the storm.............

pirate: : And the monorails inside the Contemporary?

:jester: : I didn't take have a camara.

:Pinkbounc : You went to WDW without a camera?!!!

:jester: : No, I had plenty of cameras.

pirate: : Oh, so you left them in the van and could'nt take pics?

and thats when :jester: sheepishly admitted that with all the excitement he didn't think to take pics and had not even considered it until we mentioned it.

And No, We're not going to let him live this one down.

The OP mentioned there were two monorails in the station, but didn't mention if they were on the same track. I was gussing that they would have been on different tracks and wouldn't have stuck out at all.

I have to say that it was really odd being at the CR during Charley. And seeing the monorail cars being stopped there was really odd, to say the least. But, for the life of me, I don't remember seeing anything covering the openings!! Must have been due to the cars taking up so much room. Tyler (or anyone else for that matter) where do the rest of the cars go to in a case like that? Dh and I were trying to figure out exactly where all the cars would be housed to keep them safe.

:Pinkbounc I'm the other "Diser" that the Black Pearl wrote about, regarding a mutual friend that had stayed at the Cont during the hurricane.

He told us that there were 4 monorails parked inside the Cont and that they put plywood on the holes to block the storm. And no he did not take pictures. UUUURRRRRGGGGG!!!

The rest of the cars go into the monorail barn (which is located above the Steam Engine roundhouse. Not all the cars can fit in the barn.

This past Sunday my sister asked the Monorail driver if the openings at the Contemporary were ever closed. He replied that the only time was once during Charley.

Hmmm.....we also asked a monorail driver if the doors at the CR were closed for Charley (this was the Sunday after the storm) and she said NO - they were afraid the doors WOULDN'T close as they hadn't been used in years and didn't want to risk them getting stuck in some odd position....
Wish someone knew what really happened:confused:

As I posted before, A friend of mine stayed at the Conteporary and took a walk through the reort, he said they had 4 monorails parked inside and the holes were blocked up with plywood.

Terry - I missed that bit about the plywood closing up the opening.... (duh!)
Thanks!
Beth
