I have a few questions please :)

1. What is the difference between this beach and the rest of it? Or maybe I should ask, where? There is a surf competition there on the 30th which we would actually like to see.

2. We would also like to eat at Ruby's Diner which is on the pier. Is this pier and the HCB near each other?

3. Given that a competition is happening, what time should we arrive to get parking?

4. Is there a place you would recommend for surf lessons?

Thanks! I think that is all the questions I have for now!

I don't have any answers to your questions because it's been 10 years since I've been to Huntington Beach, but holy crap Ruby's is absolutely awesome. I think I need to make a stop there on one of my upcoming trips.

The pier is part of the Huntington City beach. The pier starts at the end of Main St at the beach.
My suggestion would be to check the website for the event to see if it is close to the pier & parking suggestions
We stayed at the Hyatt south of the pier and walked up to that area at least 2xs a day to eat in town on our trips. We never checked the distance but it wasn't a short walk but not too long either.

City beach is the couple miles just north and just south of the pier, owned and run by the city of HB. The rest of Huntington Beach's is state beach and run by CA. Same sand :)

If you are talking about the US Open of surfing the end of July, it takes place just south of the pier. Parking will be NUTS everywhere downtown. The meters have to be fed every couple hours and they do ticket. Best bet for free parking is to park way back along/near Main Street and walk, or get there early if you want a chance at beach parking.

Ruby's is awesome and would be very busy that week with a major competition in town. It's a fun atmosphere all around, but be prepared for Disney-sized crowds.

Thanks :) We were looking at June 30th - there is a scholastic surf competition according to the beach's website. After talking with some locals, we decided to go to Newport beach instead.
