Humiliated at AKL

I guess I will have to disagree with you all that sobbing on the ground wasn’t reason to suspect a mental health crisis. While I don’t doubt people throw actual tantrums all the time , I don’t think it would take much to approach this from a place of empathy. I’m not saying anything other than “hey can we get you some help ? Are you alright ?” as a response. I think it’s completely overblown to suggest since people have been killed for trying to help someone who’s having a mental break that they should have ignored this situation. How trained do you need to be empathetic ? Express concern ? That’s all I expect.
I guess we will have to agree to disagree here.
You misunderstood a few parts of what I said, or maybe I miscommunicated them. Even if they suspected a mental health crisis, they are not really qualified to deal with one. I wasn’t talking about the people trying to help being killed (though that’s also not uncommon), I was talking about the individual suffering the event being killed. It happens. Frequently. Someone suffers a psychiatric event, a person with insufficient training intervenes, and someone ends up hurt or dead.

Most places have protocols that need to be followed for situations like this for safety and liability reasons. We do not know what Disney’s policies are, or whether or not the CM’s were following them. I do however know from my experience as a clinician that many institutions’ policies are to call 911 and have emergency services remove the person to a place where they can receive help. I’m not sure if that would’ve been preferable or not, but that’s what would have happened in 9/10 other locations. I think it’s a bit unreasonable to expect *anything* from someone who’s job is to check reservations into a computer to intervene in a mental health crisis in any way.

Edit: It also just dawned on me that FLA is a Baker Act State, so it’s not a far stretch for this scenario resulting in OP spending 72 hours under psychiatric evaluation in a mental health facility. Again, not making a value judgement about whether or not that *should* have been the case, just saying it’s another way it could have went.

Sorry all, closing. There’s not much here about Disney hotels, the OP had a DVC villa. Discussion about what time you get your villa is best suited for the DVC board. Discussion of mental health and appropriate accommodations is best suited for our disAbilities board, which is frequented by many helpful folks and is a welcoming place.

Thank you.
