I interviewed for an RN Medicare case management position for patients recently discharged from the hospital. This was with Humana. It is an 8-5 position from home. Have any of you ever done a job like this and what were the pros and cons?
By the end of the interview I started to feel that I may be a prisoner in my own home tied to a computer and phone all day. I am used to more flexibility as an occupational health nurse. If offered the job, I am trying to decide if working from home is really the right thing for me.

Just from my own 10 years of working from home this:

If you are a real people person, it will be hard
If you know no one and you will have little contact with co workers it will be hard

If they give you a lot of flexibility in your workday hours, it will be easier
If you were in an office before with too many distractions, it will be easier

Maybe one question is what are your distractions at home? Also, how have you been handling "shelter in place", if you've had to do it?

I have been working remotely since mid-March, with one day a week in the office. This past week it was upped to 2 days a week in the office. It has solidified for me that I am not a work from home person. With the two days in office and three home I could manage, but really can't wait to return to the office full time.

My sister-in-law has done a similar job for probably 10 years or so.

This is definitely true at least for her position. She has to be on the computer/phone the entire time other than a specified break for lunch. I think there's even a monitoring system to ensure that she's working (like it checks mouse movements on the computer). She also has a certain number of cases she has to get done, so sometimes she works later than 5 (but does not get paid for the extra hours since she is salaried). It works for her. She likes that she can roll out of bed and directly start working. She likes that it's fairly set hours.

It would absolutely not work for me. I also work from home and am paid a salary, but I do not have that level of micro-managing or oversight. I'll often start working before 6am and take calls/texts at various times including the weekend, but unless I have a meeting scheduled I am free to manage my time as I see fit. I can walk my dog, take my kids to the orthodontist, go to the gym, (check out the Disboards :rolleyes1 ) during "work" hours because my schedule is flexible. To me, those are the benefits of working at home.

I am right there with you. I have been working from home full time since March. They are just starting to reopen our offices in small waves. My company and area has tried several times to convert me to full time WFM and I have never wanted it. And now having worked at home the last 3 months, I was right. This full time WFM is not for me. I can't wait to return to the office and thankfully got an exception to return eventually. I will be a late wave due to high risk family members in my household, so I will be one of the last to return.

My dog, he was by my side all day. And BARKS at any little thing. Kids, if you have them at home YOU ARE AVAILABLE it doesn't matter how old they are. The robo calls or calls in general because you are at home. The cable going down from the cable co, the power going out, the guy next door who's building a new garage, the new blacktop poured on your street, and I could add more..... I was not a shelter in place.
