Well, I don't know about currently, but this was taking place last summer when I visited. I have a feeling it will stay this way as well for two reasons.
1) Guests no longer have to go "backstage" to access the stairs. While I liked walking around under the track, not was never the best option. The first time I went through the line, I thought I made a wrong turn and ended up someplace I did not belong.
2) Now express guests can enter the "front row" line, which is something that could not happen the old way.
However, while I do like this new way, it causes some problems.
1) Merging with other guests. During my time there last summer, they had a team member blocking the normal line while express people entered the main line once. The other time I went, this was not the case. Needless to say, the main line was not very happy that they were having people "cut" in front of them.
2) The wait time for express guests has more than doubled. You merge into the main line as close to the start of the ride is possible, but it is still a little ways back. Both times last summer when the normal line had a 60 minute wait, I waited nearly 20 minutes. While the time was reduced, I am used to the 5 minute waits most other rides offer...10 minutes tops.
