Huge mexican wave at Fanstamic

Yes, it has happened every time we have been there - seems to happen more just as it is going dark!!!:thumbsup2

It happened when we were there May 3rd. It went back and forth for a good ten minutes! --Katie

Yep happens every time we have been there. Never heard it called a Mexican wave before.

Yeah- I too have never heard it called that.

I honestly clicked on this thread b/c I was so shocked that someone was posting something w/ some sort of racial anything in it.
I literally thought you were gonna be talking about a large group of hispanic people doing the wave and I was really offended....

But I don't think that the poster meant it as anything other than that's just how they've always heard people refer to this before...but it is definitely not an expression I'd feel comfortable using.

It is known as a Mexican Wave in the UK because it became a feature of soccer matches when the Soccer World Cup was held in Mexico in 1986. Nothing to do with Mexico really apart from it being the host country.

I'm curious as to what you do call that kind of wave then? I've never heard it called anything else.

Did you know that there's actually a country called Mexico, and that people that are from there are called Mexican. It has nothing to do with race...

Are you offended when you see a Mexican restaurant as well?

I agree...if you're offended by the word 'mexican' you might have some issues.

When I first experienced this at Fantasmic it was a lot of fun. We varied the speed from slow motion to really super fast and it was a lot of fun. A great way to pass the time.

Do CMs get this started or is it a flash mob kind of thing? :)

There's a pretty good entry on this at wikipedia.

I have never heard of it referred to as the Mexican wave either. We always just call it "the wave".

it takes only the actions of a few dozen fans to trigger a wave. Once started, it usually rolls in a clockwise direction at a rate of about 12 m/s (40 ft/s), or about 22 seats per second. At any given time the wave is about 15 seats wide. These observations appear to be applicable across different cultures and sports
.

You should never feel too tired, too old, or too embarassed to go nuts with the wave!

I was going to say the same thing.

haha. Ok, yes. obviously i'm aware that Mexico is a country :-)

I had no idea of the origin of this name- I wasn't aware that people called it that as a result of "the wave" originating in Mexico.

Since I'd never heard of that b4, to me- it sounded awfully similar to how someone (and we all know we've met someone like this) would refer to anyone from a hispanic heritage as "mexican"- just like some people to all people from an Asian nation as "Chinese"- and I just assumed it was a negatively undertoned type of phrase, just like how people used to use the term "Chinese fire-drill".

To someone who's never heard the term- it def does come across slightly offensive.
That being said, I had no idea it was a valid term used by people and did not know it referred to country of origin.

As a proud husky I had no idea "the wave" had any other name. It started in 1981, husky stadium, Seattle. :goodvibes

Here in Brazil we call it "Ola".
And when it's happening everyone goes "OOOOOLAAAAA"!
