Huge loop before Epcot International Gateway entrance?

We have entered Epcot several times through the International Gateway throughout the years and have always wondered what the huge loop is outside the entrance. And if memory serves me correctly, there used to be a huge canopy in between the loop and the ticket booths for Epcot that has since been removed. Does anybody have any idea what this used to be if anything? I attached a google earth image of the area to help. Funny thing is that it looks like that day they took the satellite images there was a marathon and used part of the loop for it. :)

Yeah that's me by the yellow cones running the marathon in mile 24.5 coming into Epcot by the UK,OK I was there running it but who knows where I was when that shot was taken. You can also see the runners going into DHS behind the scenes by TOT.As far as the loop,I know they had some kind of tram about 20 years ago as I saw a video on YouTube.I'm assuming the tram took people to the resorts, except for the Boardwalk as it wasn't built yet.In the video you see the tram drive by what will be the Boardwalk,I think the signs were up saying the resort was coming but there's nothing there.

I know they had some kind of tram about 20 years ago...

Correct.

They also use that area to unload/load buses for special events (like corporate and wedding parties) that take place in World Showcase.

Agree with PP. When they were beginning the Epcot Resorts area, there was a tram from the International Gateway to the Epcot Resorts. I vaguely remember a covered structure at IG where you picked up the tram (either where that grassy oval is or between the grassy oval and the ticket booths). I also remember the whole Boardwalk Inn side of the lake was just empty land, with green plywood construction walls. The Swan, Dolphin, Yacht Club and Beach Club opened on different dates in 1990. BWI opened in 1996. I also remember riding on the double-decker buses that went around Epcot World Showcase that had stops where you could get on and off.
