Huge DVC point rental frustration from non-member

OK. So I hooked up with a super nice lady willing to rent me points for March 21-27 at BWV for a studio. (I am desperately trying to getcloser to the parks than my current POR reservation without tapping into my 401K to do it)

But, when she checked, there is no availability. I was saddened that plans had fallen through. I figured I was too late and they were sold out, but NO!

What really turns my crank is that there is actually PLENTY of room at the BWV during those dates just not for DVC members. What's up with that?!

If I was a DVC member, I'd be furious of only people paying oop could reserve. IAren't the villas a DVC property first? I can't afford the oop expense at BWV...At $375 per weekday and $485 per weekend night for a STUDIO, that's too rich for my blood. I can't believe too many people could spend that kind of cash for that property. At that price point, the Grand Floridian is within reach!

I'm sorry to vent...it just seems that Disney is trying to milk their DVC properties twice...once from the owners (who can't even reserve there when they want to!) and then again from us poor schmoes who would like to stay there too.

The culprit, if that's even the correct word, is that there is two (at least) different types of inventory, member and developer...all the member inventory is booked...no real surprise there...and what's left is a combination of developer inventory and rooms traded out to other options within the DVC system (crusies, concieirge collection, ect.) that DVC is now trying to rent to pay for whatever the member traded out for.
It can seem frustrating, but remeber member inventory makes up the vast majority of the rooms, somewhere between 94-95% I believe.

The rooms available through CRO are not available to DVC because they are of a different inventory. When someone from DVC exchanges a reservation for a non-DVC resort, that inventory ceases to be part of DVC, and becomes available to CRO only. Some DVC person has already used that inventory for a trade, so it isn't there anymore.

I answered on your other thread, but the above post explains it, too. There are only a certain number of rooms in the inventory available to DVC members using their points, and when they are booked, they are booked. You are trying to rent points during the very busy Spring Break season, and since you are only about 6 to 8 weeks out and members have had 11 months to make these reservations, there is not much chance that there will be a room for you using points. Sorry about your disappointment, but this is something that every DVC member learns early on. That's why we make those ressies when we can at 11 months!!!

As far as the cost, Disney charges what the market will bear, just like any other business. There are lots of people like you who want to stay as close as possible to the parks - that's why they are more expensive. And they do get those rooms rented, so there are people who can and will pay those rates for the rooms you are describing. When you stay there often enough at those rates, DVC membership starts to look very attractive!!!

I hope you can work something out and have a great trip -PO is a beautiful resort!!!

I just now noticed that you are trying to travel in MARCH of THIS YEAR!!! DVC members usually make their DVC plans at 11 months ahead of a trip. This would be very late for any of us to assume we would be able to get a studio reservation during a holiday time. This is just before Easter week, so a VERY busy and popular time.

I understand your frustration, it's really upsetting to be looking forward to something and not be able to make it work out.

Look at it as a learning experience for the next time you rent points. Timeshares often work best when you plan long-term. DVC members can book at their home resort at 11 months out, and at other resorts at 7 months out. So, the chances of getting a BWV studio at two months, during a very busy time of year, were always very slim.

Sorry....hope you enjoy your time at POR!

Wow, talk about a sense of entitlement.

This poster is a classic example of why renting points hurts all owners, just my opinion.

Well, thanks for being mad on my behalf, but as a DVC owner, it doesn't bother me at all.

For the record, if the room isn't likely to be rented out, CRO will sometimes release the rooms back to DVC inventory.

Last year, Easter week was booked solid at WDW. I tried to get a reservation anywhere but ended up having to stay off-site. A few weeks from now you might be really glad to have the POR reservation.

Sorry, MsA, but I hardly feel "entitled" to anything...I was simply trying to stay in a somewhat nicer property and help out a member who, for whatever reason, couldn't take advantage of points that are about to expire. A win/win situation from where I stand.

It is the OWNERS putting up the posts to sell. I was willing to pay a fair price that she set, by the way, and based on the hundreds of rental transactions that take place everyday on these boards, I don't think renters are "hurting" anyone...

just my opinion.

Oh and thanks Dis-Happy,

I really feel do feel fine about POR. Was simply trying to minimize some of the bus/wait times to and from our resort for the little ones. Disney is what you make it to be right?:yay:

Even the bus rides can be an adventure (I guess) if you have the right attitude!

I didn't get the 'entitled' sense from the OP, either.

Must be lost in translation.

Port Orleans is nice, I like the cloppity cloppity sound of the horses and buggies. Buggys? Eh, no more posting for me tonight.

Rack rate on DVC studios is nuts, and there's nothing wrong with looking for a more reasonable option when it's out there. Just have to start looking a looooooot earlier :D

Slightly OT compared to the discussion but responds to the original post.

I do understand the OOP prices for BWV despite the proximity of the GF since I would always choose BW over GF if I had a choice.

I'd suggest that you stick with POR for this vacation but think about renting the next time--just remember that DVC members work on a schedule and you usually need to book around 7-11 months out.

I don't get a 'sense of entitlement' at all from the OP. I know some here disagree, but renting is one of those things that's good for both sides, IMO. Owners have a way to get rid of points they can't use and get compensated for their maintenance fees. Renters can get a very nice resort stay that otherwise might not be financially possible for them. Everybody's happy.

Disney Newbies, are you open to trying the alternative of BCV? At this late date, even if the person you're renting from doesn't own there, she's certainly within in the 7 month window to try there, if she's willing to call again and ask.

But as others have said, with the time of year and the timeframe, availibility might be hard to come by.

Good luck!

as Members, we are all aware of this situation and knew it when we bought in. If we didn't, it was due to lack of advance study.

Therefore we don't let it bother us and book what we need far enough out that it does not affect us.

Ex-ac-a-tac-ly. It's late in the game to be trying to get March '07 and we all know this. I doubt any DVC members are going to be up-in-arms over this. We've booked long ago if we wanted it.

How many more posts are you going to post about your frustration with DVC resorts?

Just a thought - have you thought about SSR? Last year I made a late reservation in February for March and all they had was SSR. I was disappointed at first but ended up loving it. Also, the quiet pool in Congress Park is my favorite - there's nothing like sitting in the hot tub looking at Downtown Disney. I like the studios there better than at BWV or BCV. It is a hike to the parks but so is POR.

We also LOVE Port Orleans so you can't go wrong there either. Have a great trip!

I hate to disagree but.....

All the commercial renter witch hunts, that have driven most of these fine DISsers and Owners from this site ;) caused this situation to happen! :laundy:

Had any professional renters remained, they would have spec booked the dates the OP needed and been able to meet the OP's rental needs :stir:

Now we have a dissapointed Renter, and in general a person who likes something tells 4 -5 people, while someone who dislikes something tells (complains) to 10+ people.

:teacher: It is simple math, the more people who are disappointed directly due to the dearth of the (We commercial Renters actual prefer the term Professional, BTW) Professional Renter, The DVCs 'reputation' will suffer, ultimately driving DOWN the price of resales.

FWIW, I do not think it is too late for us to :grouphug: appologize to the Professional renters driven from this board (except for the few actually burned at the stake), and implore them toreturn and save us all!

-Tony

P.S. My new disclaimer does not apply to this reply, my old one does!

Tony, I completely agree with you. The problem is not the renting of points. The problem is spec renting of weeks. Which Disney could solve easily without a scorchered earth policy on renting.
