Hubby's Driving Licence Problems

Hubby got stopped by the police on Monday for talking on his mobile

We fly out to Orlando on Saturday and of course they've taken his card and paper driving licence to send off to have the points put on.

The policeman gave him a formal notice sheet thingy (sorry haven't a clue what its really called) which has all his details, driving licence number of etc and on the back it states that it suffices as his driving licence until his card and paper come back.

Now of course we are suppose to be hiring a car when we get to MCO on Saturday afternoon with both myself and hubby driving. What are the chances that the people behind the Dollar counter will accept the piece of paper hubby has?

I doubt it for a second that they will and I will have to do all the driving much to my disgust, but hubby is adamant about trying.

I am so annoyed with him its not funny!!!:mad::mad:

Sorry to hear this has happened and I am sure you have told him in no uncertain terms how foolish/dangerous it was to be talking on the mobile while driving :scared1:

I am surprised that they took his licence off him. For a fixed penelty fine here you would take your licence along with the fine paperwork to a sheriff courthouse.

My guess is that the carhire company would want to see the actual licence.
Might be worth contact the police station and explaining the need to get your DH's licence back before Saturday.

Oh yes he has had a few choice words thrown at him!!

You normally send your licence away here with the £60 fine and they then send it back. Hubby explained the problem about us going away Friday to the policeman, who said if he took hubby's licence there and then, he would submit it same day and that hubby could go and pick it up from the station where they process it. Well it looks like said policeman is being an BEEP and hasn't even bothered submitting the licence to be processed as hubby has rung up everyday since Monday to find out if its been sorted only be to told it hasn't reached them yet.

Unfortunatley there isn't alot else we can do, i'll just have to do all the driving, not happy about it but again not alot I can do

I would be surprised if they accepted the piece of paper that has been given to you as this will probably only suffice in the UK as a temporary replacement.

You are right to just plan for the fact that you will have to do the driving. Just tell him that as you can't drink now, neither can he. And confiscate his mobile phone :lmao:

No I don't think they will accept it either, but he keeps telling me its worth a try. He has spoken to Dollar in the UK and they have said they would accept it, but what I keep trying to tell him is that UK and USA are different and just because one will accept it doesn't necessarily mean the other will. MEN - THEY JUST DON'T LISTEN

Luckily I don't drink anyway so that doesn't bother me. We just both like to drive in Orlando and we're planning on going to the Aquarium in Tampa, didn't fancy doing all that driving on my own :(

I would be surprised if they would take it to.

If I were you I'd email the US dollar site and explain to them and if they say OK take the email with you, this may help you case.

Good idea.

Think positive, too!

There is a chance they may accept it.

Oh no what a planners nightmare. I would be chasing the police station - ask to speak to a senior if possible - I think there is no chance of dollar taking the temp licence. At least you have another driver available. Sorry to hear this.

This has me thinking as well Lisa. If Dollar UK would accept, then what about getting the UK office to validate the cover certificate and asking them if they can confirm it with Dollar USA

Thanks everyone. We have been told that the endorssing office has received his licence, so thats some good news. They just don't know if they have anyone in the office today or tomorrow to endorse it so that he can go and collect it. I know it will be sods law and our bad luck that they wont, but hey im keeping my fingers crossed :)

I'm a bit confused as to why the officer took his licence in the first place. It's the DVLA who endorse the licence, not the police. I have checked with DH who is a solicitor and deals with a lot of driving and fixed penalty offences, and he says the officer should have simply issued a fixed penalty notice, your DH would then respond to that, and if he accepted it, submit his licence with the form. Not everyone accepts the fixed penalty - you can dispute it and have the case dealt with by the Courts, the fixed penalty notice should say all of the options on it. If he did accept it, he could send the fixed penalty notice back with a letter saying the licence will follow as he is going abroad. There should be no issue with that.

DH says your DH should insist on having his driving licence back by contacting the local police station and speaking to the Inspector on duty if he has no joy with the actual officer. It all sounds a bit strange!

Good luck in any event :goodvibes

Thanks for your help guys. Good news is hubby can pick his licence up from the local court tomorrow afternoon, so we are leaving here around 2pm, off to pick his licence up and then onto Gatwick, phew what a relief - just hope its all ok when we get to the court - would be just our luck that it wouldnt be!!!

Not really applicable anymore, but some rental companies offer check-in at a computer. You just enter all your informations incl. driver license no. on the internet and when you arrive at the rental car office, you scan your booking confirmation at the machine, it prints your rental contract and you are off to your car without having to deal with a rental car rep.

You can still surrender your licence on the spot for an endorsable fixed penalty or send it in later. Glad to hear it should be back for the holiday :)
