I am in the middle of planning our FIRST family vacation to WDW (April 2016)...yes I know, I know I'm planning WAAAY ahead of time! Anyway...we will be arriving Sunday night (no ticket) and we have 3 day tickets with Park Hopper. Obviously MK is a given for at least a day and maybe 1/2 of another, but I'm trying to decide which of the other parks would be beneficial for us. My kids will be 5, 9, 12 and 14 when we go...we will be splitting up some days bc of the age differences in the children. The thought of being at WDW and NOT going to ALL 4 parks truly depresses me :( but I just dont want to be running around, pressed for time and not really ENJOYING the vacation. Any suggestions/advice/opinion will be GREATLY appreciated!!

That's a tough one, it really depends on your kids likes. Some will tell you HS is not worth it but there are a number of things for little kids to do there. If they like animals AK is worth at least a half day, you might split a half day with HS and AK and split your other half day MK and Epcot.

Epcot and MK are always MUSTS for us. DHS and AK, we can take or leave. Most things we've done in DHS and AK, we don't really care to do again. And then, the list of things to do in DHS always seems to be dwindling, doesn't it? It is certainly a park in transition.

AK has a ton of walls up right now. I don't know what the state of it will be in April of 2016. I'm pondering this as well, because our next trip will be March 2016.

FWIW, we always do 2 days in EP and 2 days in MK. Last trip, we did one evening in DHS, mainly to see the Osborne Lights (which won't be a factor in your trip).

I don't want to tell anyone what to do, but I just can't imagine a trip without Epcot in it. It's a really unique place.

I would do it this way: plan a full MK day, half HS day and a half AK day.

Then park hop to Epcot one evening and park hop to MK on your last evening.

I think then they would miss out on Soarin and Test Track - or at least one of them if they used their FPs in Epcot for that half day. And one evening is really not enough time to properly experience World Showcase, especially if you're spending part of that time riding things in Future World.

I think I'd do one full day in MK + one half of another day, 1 full day in EP, and then spend the other 1/2 day in DHS or AK, whichever appeals to you most.

You know your family best -- plan your days according to what you think that the kids and adults would like to do, rather than what you think you are "supposed to do." Your kids are old enough that they will find things to enjoy in a four parks -- whether their preferences are thrill rides, character meet & greets, or shows.

For general planning purposes, since your first inclination is to hit all four parks, I would propose scheduling a full day in the MK, a half day in each of the other three parks, and the remaining half day back at MK. You might decide to change that, but at least it's a starting point. The parks are constantly changing, so stay abreast of what is available. The earliest that you need to decide where you will be on a particular day is in October, when you can start making ADRs. Even then, nothing is set in stone.

I would skip AK, do one full day at MK and one MK/Epcot split and one Split HS/Epcot on one day.

Different strokes for different folks! My kids are always kind of bored in World Showcase but we would never dream of missing Expedition Everest and the Safari at AK or Tower of Terror and Rock N Roller Coaster at HS :-)

It's so subjective, isn't it?! Epcot has been my daughter's favorite park since she was 5 or 6. She *likes* DHS, but mainly for the shop that has all the Nightmare Before Christmas stuff. And we were all bored in AK. Thinking of giving that one another shot on this next trip, but can't come up with a whole lot of things to be excited about there. The Safari was just ok for us. I don't want to be that person who compares AK to a zoo, but it really felt like that to us. Don't get me wrong - we like zoos, but we have a great one in our hometown, and we hate to waste a ticket on it.

Not really caring about order, change as you wish.
Magic Kingdom
Magic Kingdom then EPCOT (FP+ attractions in EPCOT)
Animal Kingdom then Hollywood Studios (FP+ attractions at HS)

Thank you all for your suggestions!!! I know MK will def be a full day and another half day (or evening)...there is just no way I can make do with one day at MK!!

You are so smart to get hoppers! Yay! Despite the closures at HS I would still go there. I'm thinking your kids will want to do Toy Story Mania for sure. The older ones maybe RnRC and ToT? Muppets 3D is fun, so is the Lights Motors Action. Maybe lunch at Sci Fi for burgers and sandwiches and a cool atmosphere. Then you could go for a swim and hop or just hop directly to another park.

AK is my family's least fav. park, always has been. Some years we skip it but with hoppers we usually try for a half day there. Last trip we hopped in at 4pm just to ride EE twice then left!

Going in April you should get some emh eve. park hours, depends on which day you go. We did an eve emh at HS and did soooo many rides, it was great and that park is cool at night. MK is my fav for eve emh.

You might consider watching a planning video with your kids and making sure they all get to voice an opinion on one or two special things they each want to be sure to see or do.

As for Epcot, I have always loved that park and my kids did too at an early age. I think it was because we did the masks and passports but it took them two different trips to complete the passports. They always loved the gift shop in Japan when they were young, and still do. If you are there at night try to do a dinner in a country and see Illuminations.

Excited for you having your first trip... best wishes! :wizard:

If I were you, I'd drop the PH to save $. Are the 3 park days nonnegotiable? It would be great if you could manage a 4th! That being said, don't try to cram it all into 3 days. I'd do two full days at MK, and then one full day at whichever park you think your family would like best. (I'd choose Epcot, but that's just me.) You won't miss what you don't see. To me, having only a few hours in one park is just a tease! Epcot needs at least full day, and 1.5 MINIMUM at MK.

I'd say DHS .. it has some entertaining shows, fun theming and it has the two "thrill" rides for the older kids... BUT .. with the rumored expansion of DHS who knows what condition it will be in a year! (It already is missing several attractions that have been closed for good) .. Right now DHS is mainly a bunch of shows (which some, like myself enjoy) and really only 4-5 actual "rides". (fun rides none the less)

If you don't like it what it has to offer ... hop over to Epcot via the boat (and enjoy a relaxing ride)

AK is neat theming .. but honestly doesn't offer enough attractions if your family has no interest in zoos. For me, that is the best part of AK .. the safari, the walking areas .. the train to the petting zoo, etc., but there isn't enough "rides" here to satisfy most people (again . .only about 5 actual "rides" in the park .. two of which are "kid" rides).

Disney isn't all about the rides like most theme parks .. it is a lot about the experience, but it just depends what your family would find interesting.

Actually, maybe I'l change my mind! LOL. Do 1 day MK, 1 day Epcot, then 1/2 MK (a.m.), then 1/2 HS (use FP+ for TSM, TOT, and Star Tours, and do single rider later in the night for RNR.)

This is so true, I could not agree more! There are small things you will enjoy that you can't even plan, something that unexpectedly catches your eye, a character interaction, a snack in a special spot, your child's reaction to something, a relaxing ride on the people mover, a lesser attraction that ends up being a memory maker etc... ::yes::

For a trip that short, I would just focus on MK and EPCOT. We usually spend 2 days at MK, 2 at EPCOT, 1 at DHS, and 1/2 day at AK. DD, 9, has loved EPCOT since she was 2. If your kids like Phineas and Ferb at all, they will probably love the Agent P missions throughout World Showcase. I would probably plan the 1st day at MK, 2nd day at EPCOT, and then the 3rd day assuming that you have a lot more to get done at MK, I would go back there. If you do MK and EPCOT the 1st 2 days, then you can always decide on the 3rd day to try either DHS or AK if you don't feel the need to go back to one of the other 2. Will you be going before the spring break crowds are over? If that is the case, then I would definitely focus on just a couple of parks as the lines will likely be long for everything and will slow down how much you can do in a day.

The one thing that could change this would be if there is something at DHS or AK which would be extremely important to one of the kids. For example, DD would probably not be amused if she did not get to ride Star Tours at DHS, it is one of her favorites. If one of your kids is a huge Star Wars fan, that ride might become a priority.

The good thing is that you have hoppers, so if you decide you really want to see another park enough to forego some time in the park you have picked for that day, then you can hop over and try it. Just be aware that hopping takes a lot of time and should be done sparingly. It often takes an hour, or even sometimes longer to get out of one park and into another- so there is lost time when you hop. Still if you are going on a trip that short, we would prefer the flexibility.

For us, AK is always the last choice. DD has never really been a fan. I really enjoy AK (although last fall it was full of construction walls which really detracted from the experience in my opinion) and she typically tolerates it for a while for me and then asks to leave and go back to EPCOT or MK. She likes the Safari and the Lion King show and seeing the characters, and that is about it. I believe it is because we have a very good zoo at home. I think that she has no interest in watching the same kind of animals we can see at home when she could be riding rides and seeing Disney characters. If you don't have a great zoo at home, your kids might feel differently about AK. AK is more than a zoo, but DD just never seemed to think it was enough more to warrant the expense of her "Disney time". I will say though that since they started doing the Wilderness Explorer booklets where you go through the park doing tasks and earning sticker badges when she was age 7, she has enjoyed AK quite a bit more, and will stay longer than she used to. I'm not sure how that will impact the next trip because she now has completely finished the book (in 2 trips). I don't know if she will want to start over, will still enjoy AK, or if she will revert to her old ways and be begging to leave by noon. I'm also not sure what shape or differences there will be at AK by your trip with all the construction.

Have fun planning!

After reading this, I have to say, I agree. I would rather do fewer parks more thoroughly, than just hit a few things and feel like we left without doing everything we wanted to do. Plus, you're right: Hopping takes precious time.

We just did 3 days the week before last. We did DHS/Epcot WS, MK, Epcot FW/AK. Next time I'm getting that 4th day. It was hectic, but it worked. At MK, we were there from 7:30am-10:30pm for this to work. DS9 was good with it, but I don't think he could have handled it at 5 or 6.

As a side note, I think it's easiest and fastest to hop between Epcot and DHS, because you just take the boat. MK requires a transport change, and the buses to the others can vary a lot.

I would do it this way: plan a full MK day, half HS day and a half AK day.

Then park hop to Epcot one evening and park hop to MK on your last evening.

This but I'd switch the last day and do MK in the morning and Epcot in the evening. Depends on if you want to do Nemo though.

Don't fret. It will be a blast no matter what park you're in. You couldn't possibly do everything in Disney in a week even.
