DH and I are huge Harry Potter fans and thinking of being in Orlando for our next Dis trip WITHOUT seeing WWOHP is causing serious heartburn right now! ;) But our kids (DS8 and DS6 at the time of next trip) will have only read the first HP book by the time our next trip rolls around. We really don't want to deprive them of the joys of reading the books before they jump into the movies and especially WWOHP. Are there parts of WWOHP that don't contain any spoilers? Which rides could we all do as a family that won't spoil some of the magic of the books if you do them before you've read the story? Thanks so much for helping me out!

There are no spoilers in the areas. The rides have their own storylines which don't spoil anything in the books.

It's been a while since I read the books, but they possibly wouldn't "get" Gringotts after reading only one book :) depends whether you see that as a spoiler though!

Depends on what you consider spoilers
There is a Weasley Wizard Wheezes, which doesn't technically occur until after book 5
Parts of Forbidden Journey reference various books, the queue for Dragon Challenge is set up to look like the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Hippogriffs don't appear until book 3
All that being said, none of it would spoil the plots

Exactly. It doesn't say anywhere about character deaths or event outcomes.

What's great is that the areas are so relatively like how Rowling describe them so seeing uni's version only enhances future reading.

And just in case the kids are allowed videogames, the Lego Harry Potter games are fabulous. They do give big spoilers but in a fun way. Easy enough to play one story at a time though, until the next story is read and watched. We love the Lego videogames.

We go every summer, but had never seen any of the movies or read any of the books. This past year my DS has gotten into reading the books. Every time he finished a book we all watched the movie. He has finished five books so far and we just went to Universal two weeks ago. It was even more amazing now that we understood things. We didn't feel the previous trips ruined anything before DS started reading the books or before we watched the movies

Personally, I would think that all the 'tidbits' they give you at Universal would make a kid MORE inclined to go read the books.... After seeing all of that, I know it's going to make me want to go read them again after being immersed in the world.

Our daughter hasn't read any HP books yet... we're going to start book 1 soon though. (she's 8 going on 9) She won't be anywhere near done with the series by the time we go, but knowing her, it's going to make her more excited. I wouldn't worry at all about spoilers.... have fun !!!!

I somehow avoided the HP details my whole life, went to Hogmeade and rode FJ and NEEDED to know everything. Promptly after that trip I quickly read all 7 books and am now one of the biggest HP fans ever. DA is mind blowing whether you know every last detail or not. People should NOT go to Orlando without checking it out. That would be crazy. Your kids will get so much out of it and be so motivated to read the rest of the books.

I have to admit I've never read the HP books but I have seen the movies. I'll use my age as an excuse, when I was young I did read Anne McCaffery, Tolkein and Donaldson. We went to IOA in 2013 and enjoyed it, however before going this last August, I made it a point to watch all 8 movies.

I will say this, watching the movies back to back (well, not in a marathon but within a few days of each other) first of all made the whole story a lot more cohesive and certainly made me see a lot more of the small details in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.

But no, there are no strict "spoilers" in the areas, although there are definite "chronological" windows that certain rides / areas take place in, given the progression of the stories.

I really really really recommend reading the books. The first movies are very close to the movies but the further you go the more they had to leave out of the movies. I really recommend deepening your understanding of the stories by reading them.

Challenge accepted!

I would start with book 3 or 4. Books 1 and two are virtually identical. Book 3 and even more so 4 are way better than their movie counterparts.

Start with book 3 or 4. That's when they get much better than their movies.
