always remember PEMDAS--please excuse my dear aunt sally........parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division (in order from left to right) and then addition/subtraction (in order from left to right)
I was taught BEDMAS too...in practice, I look first for brackets, and then parentheses, and do both of those first (following the EDMAS rule for what's inside the brackets). My kids were also taught BEDMAS. It's a great tool!
