ETA we say BEDMAS in Canada (brackets instead of paranthesis)

I was taught BEDMAS too...in practice, I look first for brackets, and then parentheses, and do both of those first (following the EDMAS rule for what's inside the brackets). My kids were also taught BEDMAS. It's a great tool!

My DS is in 4th grade and he solved for x=16...I told him he was right but his teacher marked it wrong.
After much debate she finally agreed he used PEDMAS correctly and his answer was right.

Even more worrisome that it took "much debate" before she realized the error. Clearly it wasn't just a careless mistake on the teacher's part.
