How would you have handle this?

I think that perhaps he saw the kids sneezing, coughing or something and thought that some of them were sick. I wouldn't want to get sick at this time of the year, especially with so many concerns.

Wouldn't faze me either, I don't usually serve buffet style though. Maybe he has a medical condition that has him prone to bugs right now and he doesn't want to divulge it. People generally have a reason for the way they act. :confused3

We always fed the kids first. When they were very small the parents made plates for them. Now they are all teens so everyone gets on line whenever they feel like it. Never heard of adults going first. I'm so glad my DHs family is laid-back and I don't have to deal with ego-ridden relatives who don't like kids.

I'm not equating how going through the line before kids equals a big ego or someone who doesn't like kids.

I would assume that he didn't want to take a chance on getting sick and since kids tend to be little germ incubators, I wouldn't have thought anything of it at all..

I'm kind of surprised that you took it so personally..:confused3

IMO the Uncle should have just got on line first and not made any comment.

*Disclaimer* I am merely using these questions to prove a point- they do not reflect my opinions about such things.

What if the comment was "I want to go first before all the fatties go because there will be no food left?" or "I want to go before Aunt Tillie because she doesn't wash her hands?" or "I want my food to be the hottest so I am going first?"
All of those comments are rude and just because the adult is talking about a child doesn't make it any less rude. He should have just made sure he got up before the kids and shut his mouth imo.

I probably wouldn't have said anything, but I agree with the uncle. Especially if (I'm not saying they were, just if) the kids were picking up utensils or plates that they were not using and putting them back. Some kids are gross. I don't want to eat off a fork that was just handled by some kid that had his fingers up his nose. And believe it or not, some parents don't say a word when their little angel is touching, licking or dripping on things that other people need to use. :crazy2:
