How will the native birds at the parks survive without scraps of food from guests? Color me crazy, but it's been on my mind. The ibis were always stalking me during Food and Wine, but I love birds so I just thought it was funny.

How will the ibis survive? The native ducks?

Thank you.

Much better than they do with guests feeding them. All wildlife thrive on their normal, natural diet. Any human food they receive shortens their life.

You're not doing any critter a favor by feeding them; you are harming them. That's why you see all the signs saying, "Don't feed the alligators -- but if you must, hold the treat in your teeth!"

Seriously, feeding wildlife is really harmful to them.

Specific to ibis, they are wading birds and they normally feed on small fish, frogs, water bugs, whatever they can snag. They look kind of goofy, but they are very efficient hunters and have no trouble making a living in a place like WDW. If the fish are scarce, they'll patrol the grasslands for bugs. Don't worry about the ibis.

Cannibalism. It seems to be working for rats.

How about the Disneyland ca

Thank you for your reply! I would never feed the birds, I'd shoo them away from my food because it was Mine. 😆 I just worried that maybe they depended on guests dropping fries etc.

The ibis near us wander around our neighborhood and eat stuff out of people's yards. They move around, but usually come back every so often.

What's interesting to watch with Ibis is them hunting together with Roseate Spoonbills. Spoonbills wade along swinging their beaks through the water and mud, snapping up an occasional treat. The Ibis follow the spoonbills and snatch the stuff stirred up and fleeing the spoonbills.

They feed the Disneyland cats at hidden stations - I assume they still are doing so.

I always laugh at how the ducks can work the crowd at Kringla - they once stood at my table staring at me. I finally gave them a scrap, and they calmly ate it then started staring at the next table. I know you're not supposed to - but it's hard to resist.

Lots of documentaries on the DL cat population. I find it fascinating. I hope they're still feeding them.

We were at Sea World several years and there was a woman who was putting popcorn on top of her head I guess as a way to attract the seagulls. I envisioned that this would end badly, and it did. Five minutes later a security person was escorting her to first aid with blood running down her face.

The native birds are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves.

Just fine. If you think the birds are pushy toward humans, just think what it's actually like to be a bug or a worm when they get after you. Subtropical climate and lots of vegetation = happy birds who feast on a whole lot of crawly critters.

Jersey shore seagulls survive the non summer months, and they are some of the most aggressive food stealers.

The native birds will survive the way native birds are intended to survive...with nature. If they cannot survive in nature, they are not "native" birds, but pets.

I had a duck come around begging when we were eating duck confit poutine last year. Sorry, I'm not supporting a move to cannibalism. I'd be an abomination.
