MODERATORS: I'm hoping this is an ok question and that I am posting it in the right spot.

I have some questions as to how you rent points to someone...

Let's say I have points that I won't be able to use this year.

I'm assuming I would advertise it on the rent board (once I am eligible to do so). Then I'm assuming that someone offers to buy and we arrange payment (most likely through PayPal).

Once that is done - how do I get the points to the other party?

Also - is there a difference between renting points to someone and transferring points to someone?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I suggest you head over to the Rent/Trade forum and read all the stickies there - and then read them again (there is A LOT of info).

You will find them very helpful, not just with the who's and how's, but also what is required of you to be able to post points for rent on the DIS.

Yes, there is a difference between renting and transferring.

While it is called "Renting Points" what that really means is "Renting a Reservation." This is most often between a DVC owner and non-owner. The DVC Owner makes a reservation with MS in the name of the renter. The DVC owner has to make arrangements for the DDP and ME, if they are needed by the renter. The owner assumes responsibility for any unpaid room charges, or damage, that may be caused by the renter.

In a transfer, you actually put the points into another members account for one time use, they then become the other owners points. The other owner makes the reservation, and is responsible for any other details.

(the red words above are mine)

If you read carefully and follow all the precautions that the moderators and others suggest, it is relatively easy and safe to rent points. I did so earlier this year to two separate renters. One has taken their vacation and had a great time. The other has a vacation later this year.

You MUST follow through on what you tell the renter you will do. Also I HIGHLY recommend having a written contract. I did NOT use paypal and the renters whom were strangers to me sent me checks. But I did send them the contract after making their reservations and gave them a certain # of days to return the signed contract with their deposit or I would cancel the reservation.

It costs nothing to make the reservation. I had a renter who cancelled before I ever mailed them the contract prior to the two I actually rented to. Something came up on their part and they pm'd within a day of my making the reservation so it was no big deal.

Good Luck!

Thanks - I will read the posts to gather info before doing anything (It won't be this year). I did rent someone else's points this year for a week's vacation and it worked great.

My question is really about renting to someone a small amount of leftover points i may have in any given year. The kind of points that won't get you far - but can supplement points the renter may already have.

In that case - do you still call MS and put reservation in their name - or would this be a case where a transfer of points would make more sense?

Also - you are only allowed 1 transfer of points per year, yes?

For a small # of points, a transfer would probably work better - at least for the recepient. You would have to book an entire reservation with your points. That amount of points might not even cover one night at many locations/room sizes. I'm not sure if I'm being clear or not. The renter would end up with a separate small reservation using your points, which probably isn't ideal for most people.

If you really end up in that situation - why not just bank that small # of points for yourself for a next year's trip?

Most members would bank those points rather than try to transfer them to another member. With the one transfer per year rule, few people do transfers for such a small number of points, IMO.

Members can purchase single use points, up to 25 I believe, from Member Services when booking their reservations. So there would be no reason to waste a 1x per year transfer on something small.

You simply make the reservations for the party to whom you rented the points. The DVC member must do this. You cannot transfer your points to them. When you call DVC just tell them who you are making the reservations for. You can then send the renter all of the confirmation numbers.

In your situation, I would think if you have a small number of points that can not be banked and you are in jeopardy of losing, it would be easiest to just find someone to transfer those points to. That avoids all the booking hassle, and you don't have to worry about having enough for an entire reservation.

I've never understood how it is possible to have so many unuseable points. I have two contracts, and one of them has a difficult number of points. By that, I mean that I often get to the end of a 3 year period where there are going to be 3 points left over that can't be banked. When that happens though, I put them with some points from my other contract and book a night at the 7 month booking window so I can use those points and not waste them.

For example, this year I waited until the 7 month booking window and booked an extra night onto my December OKW reservation using the 3 "left over" points from my AKV contract that could not be banked. It's tricky, but MS can do it.
