How to remove x-mas tree sap?

We took down our tree last night (a scotch pine) and it was very sappy. There is sap all over the tree shirt. What is the best way to remove it? I was going to just try a little water on a rag but I wasn't sure if it would make it worse. I never had a tree actually drip onto the skirt. There isn't a laundry tag on the skirt so I really don't know if I can wash it or dry clean it. There is a little beading on the skirt, so dry cleaning might not be a good idea. It might be ok in the washer on cold and gentle, but I didn't think that would remove the sap without some kind of pre-treating. Thanks, Micki

I'd get a cleaning solvent to spot clean it, or take it to the dry cleaners.

Test on a hidden part of the skirt first.

Try Goo-gone. I swear by the stuff. I use it to get gum off of stuff (ie hair), and it takes that sticky stuff off when you peel a price tag.
