This must sound like a silly question but as we live in Australia and are not familiar with the area I have no idea how to pronounce it!

Can anyone help?

I am sure someone can do a better job than me but here goes.

Ana (like a girls name Anna with the A sounding like the A in apple)
heim (rhymes with “line”)

or

Try dictionary com. Type in Anaheim and then next to the word they have a little “audio” link that speaks the word for you. I love this site.

Hope this helps

Another helpful hint: Don't pronounce Los Angeles like broadcasters did in the 40s and 50s: "Loss Anguleez" :rotfl2:

Los Angeles pronounce the Mexican proper way

lows (as in the cow lows)
Ann
heh
less

lows Ann heh less = Los Angeles

i pronounce it
Lows An gel less

Anaheim is German and means Anna Town
Los Angeles is a long drawn out name and means The Angeles and refers to the Virgin Mary. Lourdes and Guadalupe are are other names that refer to her. You cannot avoid religion in California especially with a town like Sacramento.:lmao:

It's like saying Anaslime but instead you say Anaheim. Heim. Like HIME.

:rotfl2:

There are all sorts of names from locals of our areas.

Santa Maria=Santa Manure
San Luis Obispo=San Nabisco or San Luis Nabisco
Orange County=the Orange Curtain
Anaheim=Anaslime
La Puente=La Puente means The Bridge! (It's from a radio station of my youth)

The real name for Los Angeles is El Pueblo Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles OR El Pueblo Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula, depending on who's grandmother you listen to on this.

Full name for Los Angeles: El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciúncola. (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porciúncola)

Porciúncola (pronounced Por syun' koh lah) is the name of the river that ran through LA at the time (later became the LA River - that huge concrete bed)

You can see why they just call it Los Angeles ;)

Also referred to as City of the Angels

Hmmm. I always thought it was pronounced dis-ney-land.

I once met a guy from Chicago who came to visit LA, I asked about his trip and he told me about his drive down something that sounded like Sep ell Veda. It took forever for me to understand that he meant Ce pull ve da its spelled Sepulveda.

My favorite city name is La Canada. The issue is only a few signs have the accent mark over the "N" so many people want to pronunce it like the country. It is actually Spanish and is pronounced La Can ya da. But the other way is more fun :)

We have so many cultures that names come from its some times hard to know which way to go, but don't worry even locals some times argue about how to pronounce some city names :)

OK, going even more off-topic, but who can forget when Bryant Gumbel pronounced La Jolla as "Luh Jawluh" ? :rotfl2:

XM has some traffic stations, where someone reads the latest incident reports, etc. It's obvious that these are not done locally when they run into streets/exits like Sepulveda, La Cienega, and especially Cahuenga, and mention I-5 or I-10. Freeways here always start with THE. "The 5" "The 10" "The 405".

La Canada is La Ca nyah da

the third syllable is like nyah nyah you are silly not can a da, lol
It is one of the Spanish letters.

AT one time there was a lady who wanted all towns to get rid of their religious names like St. Louis, Sault Ste. Marie, and Sacramento. I could not imagine not having religion in my geography.:lmao:

I grew up in San Jose...:goodvibes

OP, don't be too worried about getting the pronunciation absolutely perfect. People are charmed by Australian accents.

go to an online dictionary (I like merriamwebster.com) and click to hear it pronounced. Here's why: your vowel sounds are different than ours. Our key words won't help you!

Another idea...listen to last week's Dis Unplugged. They were at Disney...surely they said it at least once in the broadcast!
