How To Move To Florida From Nj

my name is sandy and me and my hubby want to move to florida. near orlando area. but i am confused how to do it. i have been working at the same job doing medical payment posting /collection/billing and i have my resume on all the wwebs but i don't know if people will hire me or even e-mail me knowing i live in nj. should we move there and hope we get jobs asap since we are not wealthy.
my hubby he is in construction and handyman work so he would just need to put out his name. please i need advice i am so stressed!
i loook for houses and jobs on the web the orlandosentinel/monster/careerbuilder/orlandojobs etc

Hi, Sandy! Welcome to the DIS! My name is Sandy also, and my husband and I moved to South Florida from New Jersey 15 years ago. Hmmm...your story sounds familiar. We were here before having jobs. We lucked out...my boss in NJ had friends here. That's how we ended up where we are. My husband drove down first with his car and stayed with my boss' friends while he looked for an apartment and a job. We were VERY lucky!! Then after he found something, he flew back to NJ and we drove down together with my car. It worked nicely...except we had car trouble on 95 in Virginia. That held us up a day.

I'm now planning a move to Virginia! My sister tells me that companies don't want to know you unless you have an address in the area. So I'm going without a job and will have to find one after getting settled. But right now I'm in school and not working any way, so it's not a huge change. But I will want a job right away. Don't make a move without at least looking into the job situation. It's true that you probably won't get hired but at least have an idea of what might be available. Also be sure you have money saved before you move in case those jobs don't come through as quickly as expected. The job market in Orlando is not booming and I think you will find the pay scale substantially less than what you could make in NJ. Now, rent will probably be cheaper but a lot of other expenses (groceries, etc.) are roughly the same.

Don't just pack up and leave. Do some research first on the job market, cost of homes/rentals, etc.

About puttin your resume on the web: A friend of mine worked for Florida's largest employer in the human resource department. She once remarked that they couldn't consider hiring folks from outside Florida because there were so many unemployed right here in our state. Florida needs these people to become employed fast as possible......the state is having to help kick in for their unemployment benefits! Besides the unemployed, there are many other state residents who meet the requirements for many of the job openings. Sometimes it's necessary to make more than one trip to a prospective employer for interviews. Knowing this is part of the interviewing process, an employer would obviously know someone from out of state couldn't take part in this process. (Certainly there are exceptions to this but I'd imagine it may be due to filling a job where very specialized skills are needed.) Unfortunately, this may be the reason you haven't gotten replies to your postings on the web.

Is it possible for your husband to make a trip to Florida alone? That way you could avoid giving up your job (sounds like a good one) and a steady paycheck would be coming in while he's looking. That way, should he discover Florida's not all he thought it would be, you still have your job and won't have to start all over again. If he does find good employment, your paycheck could help you move. Whatever you two decide, I'm wishing you the very best! Keep us posted on what transpires!

I wouldn't move either without at least a good lead!! My DH & I moved to MI from CA with a 6 week old baby. It took my DH 15 months to find a job & all that time we lived off our savings (which we were prepared, but it sure ate up almost all of our savings!) I would never do that again, nor would we have all that money saved up again, like we did back then! We were both good savers before we got married & then we saved all of our wedding money too, so that helped out a great deal.

Oh...I forgot to mention, since we both quit our jobs to move here, we didn't qualify for unemployment benefits either, so we had ZERO income. ZERO. Very, very scary!

Good luck to you but think wisely before taking the plunge!

My husband and i know that the change in pay scale is big but we need to do this for me and my hubby!
i have checked into jobs and i can tell i will get a job as soon as i get there. Its just better to have one lined up like you all said. we will be going out in may and in august so hopefully one of us will get a job before we move. NJ is too much for us the cold is killing my husband since he works outside in construction and our rent is sky high ! we pay 1600.00 for 3 bdrm duplex and from what others have told me he will do good with his own business doing handyman construction work.
its just so hard moving and getting a job in another state. I am hoping by then my company will have openings in that area.
