How to make money without a job

Hey- I'm starting to save money for my 2012 cruise/WDW trip. It's gonna cost between $5000-$6000, and it's just gonna be myself and my DBF. I'm a college student with a very busy schedule and no jobs available on campus, and my school is out in the middle of nowhere so there are no jobs off campus either. Plus, I do not have a car so I cannot travel a little further to work. Therefore, the only time I can really work is over winter break and summer vacation.

I'm trying very hard to budget my spending (thank God for the unlimited swipes into the dining halls so I don't have to spend money elsewhere). My DBF has a job (he's a senior in high school) so his incoming is certainly more steady than mine, and he can regularly deposit money into our trip fund.

So how can I make money in the meantime?

Don't really understand how you want to make money without getting a job? I must be missing something? I wouldn't be going on a cruise if I didn't have the money or any future opportunity to make money in the future - that's how so many people in this country get into financial trouble!

Well even if there are no 'jobs' per say, there are ways you can use your skills or your free time in a useful way and have people pay you.

Can you put up a sign in the dorm and offer yourself as a tutor, or for doing something to help other students for pay?(like making a powerpoint presentation, word processing, photoshopping stuff)

Maybe you can find a professor or some grad students that need a babysitter for their children on the weekend or during class?

Maybe you can offer yourself to do house cleaning for pay?

Maybe you can start a grocery shopping service or errand service where people (busy professors perhaps) would pay you to to their errands.

Lawn mowing, shoveling, washing cars, delivering newspapers, dog walking, etc....

Are there any consignment shops that you can take clothes you don't want anymore to and sell? What about selling/donating plasma? Around here you can make $25 each time you go doing that. What about selling craft items on etsy.com? Also I just learned about the website fiverr.com, you can post unique things you'd be willing to do or sell for five dollars.

Is this post a scam, designed to get us all worked up? Because at your age, in your situation, funding a Disney trip would be a low priority.

If this is not a scam, and you truly love Disney, apply to their college program. Looks good on the resume, you get to work there, take classes there, and you get paid. You get in the parks for free on your days off .

My DD loved it, and still works there seasonally.

When I was in college I typed papers for other students, particularly guys who couldn't type and foreign students whose English was a little rough. I was a super fast typer and could crank these out very quickly. I included editing into my cost (allowing me to charge more than others) and would correct gramatical errors, spelling errors, etc. You can also up the price for "last minute" jobs. Paid pretty well. I just put up signs on the bulletin boards around school.
My roommate and I made handcrafted Christmas decorations. Made a couple demos and took orders door to door. Cash on delivery. We made a killing that Christmas.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for work positions, they come in all shapes and sizes. A friend got me into a position waitressing and bussing at university fundraisers and other events, a professor found me a position in the computer lab for the journalism dept, a friend of a friend got me in at the college newspaper. This was a great job since I could complete story assignments in my spare time. I would occasionally come up with my own stories or photo jobs and just turn them in. If they used them, I got paid.
None of these positions were advertised, I never filled out an application for any of them. There are always jobs available which are not "posted," you just need to make sure EVERYONE you know is aware that you are looking.

I guess I don't understand kids planning such a trip so far in the future. Your boyfriend is in high school and you are planning a trip with him for 2 years from now??

My kids in college and high school won't even commit to Christmas at this point.

Wait until both of you have graduated college and are gainfully employed and then save for a cruise.

Gee. I didnt see where the op asked if she should plan a trip with her current boyfriend. She only asked how to fund it. For all you know she may be on a full scholarship with books and living expenses already covered. Get a grip people! This is a disney message board after all! I suggest that the op look into doing customer service calls from the comfort of her home. With a reliable computer and dedicated phone line she could make a nice tidy sum of money in her spare time. Oh. I also suggest that the op and her boyfriend keep their savings separate. You dont want to lose all that youve worked for if he decides that new stereo speakers for his car are more important than your cruise.

I kind of agree.
When I read a post...if I have nothing to contribute I try not to respond. If I can find something to say that is inline with the actual question, then I post. Why would you get uptight about this post? In the end, you only have responsibility over yourself. You can't MAKE the rest of the country be financially responsible. Most of the time, the OPs don't post the whole situation in their post. They give you a quick glimpse and are asking (usually) a specific question. I think some of the answers given were great. Tutoring, babysitting, etc. This is positive feedback.
Good luck to the OP. I would agree with the PP though...keep your savings separate.

Does your college have a jobs board? If so, then post a "Job Wanted" ad... If there's something specific you'd like to do on campus, then talk to the manager/teacher & let them know that if any job openings occur, you'd like to be considered. Campus jobs can have a lot of turnaround, so if you put your name out there even if there isn't an opening, they might take you up on it once there is.

And I second the PP who said to keep your money separate until you get to the time of paying. Just in case.

She doesn't work but her schedule is "very busy"-with what? Just taking classes?

Plus she said she can work over winter break and summer break (I guess when she goes home)-so wouldn't she be able to earn enough then to pay for the trip? That is two winter breaks and two summer breaks.

OP is the $5K the cost for the whole trip? So do you only have to earn half? You could do that by just working in the summer and over break.

Look into working for UPS doing delivery over the winter holidays. My roommate in college did this for three years and made a LOT of money doing it. It was a rough job in terms of lifting, but it paid well enough that she was willing to take it on for a couple of weeks.

I think that people responded the way they did b/c we're all wondering why someone is taking on at least $6000 bill and wanting pay it without having a job. It seemed like an odd request.

I'm not paying half that for our trip for the three of us... it just seems a little excessive for someone who doesn't have the funds and it seemed like a warning might be in order to keep her from going in debt for a cruise. The parents in us came out!!

I guess selling stuff (plasma or items you're willing to trade for the trip) would be an option.

Doing the customer service calls sounds great.

You could look into doing some of the online surveys that people mention here on the disboards to earn money for a trip. I'm trying to figure out how to do that to save some extra money for us next year. It seems like a good thing once you get it figured out.

Love that you're going for Disney! Remember to not go into any debt for a trip, though. That's not something you ever want to get started on...it has a way of countering any magic pixie dust the trip will bring!!

You asked "how to make money without a job?" The answer is, pure and simple, you can't. If you even have to ask that question, then perhaps you aren't ready to take that kind of trip. What do both of your parents have to say about this trip? I know what I would say if my son asked me!!! But first, I would get his head examined
