How to make an easy tutu and hair bows~updated!

Thanks Caitsmama! I wound up adding in pink, lime and orange ribbon.

Here is the tutu in action--along with a special birthday outfit I had made to go with it! :goodvibes
That is absolutely precious!

I love the bee costume! So cute!

Here's my latest creation:

What do you have your girls wear underneath their tutus? They seem a little sheer to wear on their own (or I'm making them wrong). Shorts? Regular skirt?

My daughter usually wears little cotton stretch shorts under hers.

Here are my latest creations, some of which I made for a DisBoard member! I have branched out from the princesses and am doing some of my own designs. Now that I've made Bolt and Mittens, my kids want Penny and Rhino too! And all the Cars characters....sigh.
princesspookie.etsy.com has all the princesses on it, plus Lilo and Stitch and Bolt and Mittens. What can I say? I'm partial to Disney!

Thanks MRNs Mommy!

Cibahwewah (i just love saying that in a little girls voice), those ribbon creations are AWESOME! I love the Minnie heads! :)

I love this thread! Please post more pictures. I have been making bows for awhile, but have definitely learned some tricks off of here that should make it easier for me. I now MUST make some tutu's though! What kind of shirts do your girls where on top when you make the princess tutus?

Sorry if I am posting a question that has already been answered, haven't made it thru all the posts.

I want to try these hairbows, but a lot of the instructions are missing the pictures, please help!!

Also, I can see the instructions for the basic hairbow, but some that you all have made are so beautiful and elaborate, how did you do them?

Getting started, how to:

Search several sites for ideas and instructions:
such as:
hipgirlclips.com
etsy.com
youcanmakethis.com
youtube.com (look for hair bows)
ebay.com
girlythingshairbows.com

All you need (to start) is some grosgrain ribbon, a ruler, thread, cigarette lighter, hot glue gun, and some clips of your choice.

When I got started, I quickly realized a few things: I don't like working with satin and nylon ribbon, even though its more widely available and at times cheaper; the cigarette lighter made my thumb raw, so I got a woodburning tool; and you can never have enough colors and widths of ribbon (beware--this gets expensive very quickly). Even though I've spent a lot on supplies in the last few months, I've broken even with sales of some of my bows. And my DD has a closet door covered with bows to show for it! My latest creations are on my site if you want to take a peek: princesspookie.etsy.com, including all the Disney princesses, Lilo and Stitch, and Bolt and Mittens

Good luck.

I picked up some of the Mickey and Friends bottle caps at JoAnn's. I noticed they had princesses too. I made DD a 1 1/2 in width red grosgrain boutique bow about 4 in wide with a Mickey head bottle cap in the center. She loves it and is wearing it right now. I thought about mounting a couple of bottle caps to ribbon wrapped snap clips as well. Do any of you have any other ideas/uses for these bottle caps? They seem too thick for scrapbooking. Thanks, stumped.

I've seen people drill a little hole in the top, attach a jump ring and hang it from a necklace. That's what I planned to do with mine (got, like, 5 packages from Wal-Mart for $1 each last summer), then I discovered bows. :rotfl:

I'm also considering putting some on flip flops. I have to work out the logistics on that one.

Yesterday, my mom, sister and I all went to a local craft/flea market...while we were there, one of the booths had a set up with lots of bottle cap stuff...hairbows being one of them...but the cutest idea they had was for their necklaces. They had attached magnets to a leather necklace and then glued magnets onto the back of the bottle caps. So, you could buy the actual necklace with the magnet on it and then buy lots of different bottle caps and switch them out so that the necklace is interchangeable! I just thought it was the cutest idea! Hope I explained that right!

I have tried putting bottle caps on my bows and they just pop off! What do you attach yours with? I have tired so many different kinds of glue!!!:confused3

I started last night, although the directions are super easy, in the beggining it took a few tries to get it right. It is so hard to keep it simple! Three bows and I am hooked! I have a birthday party for a 4 year old this summer, she is going to love my gift!!!

Girl, you don't even know!! I had about 20 cranked out in the first couple days. Would have been more if it weren't for that little work thing. :lmao: Now that I have our city's supply of ribbon, I don't have the spare time (this even after I'm off work for the summer), but I should have some free time soon, so back to the kitchen table!!

ETA: Is there any way to get the wrinkles out of the tutus? Obviously no ironing, but I was thinking steaming. DNiece wore one around for about 30 minutes, and it got all crinkly.

Try hanging it in a steamy bathroom with the (hot) shower running. That worked for me.
