How to make an easy tutu and hair bows~updated!

LOL Thanks!! Obviously, i think a ribbon waist it would have to be.. and i guess i can measure my waist to get that measurement.. The tule would have to be a guessing game though..

I totally think you could do it with elastic.. just maybe not an elastic hairband. Of course ribbon works too. I just can't seem to keep DD's tied!

Well, you could always buy extra tulle and keep the receipt and return what you don't use... or just make one for a friend!

Keep us posted, I'd love to see how it looks!

Well, ultimately, i would love to make one for my mom and sis too (they are also doing the race with me) and of course i will want to make one for dd8, she wants to do the 5k race.

That is SO COOL!! That would be a great pic, get all of you together in your tutus!! princess:

Subbing.. i just read this entire thread while at work.. lol.. and i am so excited to go home and try to make a few bows! I have some great Disney ribbon that i bought on clearance YEARS ago, that is just sittin' in my craft room!

Question on Tu-tu's for adults... Any idea on measurements for an adult tutu? I am running the Disney Princess 1/2 marathon next year (did it this year too!) and think this would be fun to wear over my running capri's.. but don't know about size of tulle, waist etc.. as i haven't attempted to make any yet.

I don't know about the measurements either, but just wanted to say that I think that would be so cute and funny!

My DD4 has two of the tutus with ribbon-tie waists...one is a more smooth/silky type ribbon and it NEVER stays tied...the other is a grossgrain and it stays tied just fine...so maybe go with that kind, Caitsmama.

ahh... good point about the different types of ribbon!

Hah! If I can do it, anyone can! And it is VERY addictive!;)

I warned you several posts ago that it was addictive so don't say you weren't warned!:lmao:

You asked where my DGD lived in MS and I thought I responded but I don't see where I did. Sorry about that. They live in the delta in a little town called Indianola. They do get to Jackson a couple times a month to shop, tho.

finally made my first 2 sets of bows.

they came out ok.....but you all make it look way easier than I found it to be.

oh well, i need practice i guess!!

Ok, can anybody talk to me about the starching process.....I made some bows with grosgrain (thick) and they keep flattening and I was wondering if I could use a stiffening spray at this point or does that have to be done prior to making the bow?

TIA!

What size ribbon is being used? I know this has been asked, but I haven't found the response..... How are you all attatching the bow to the clip?

Thanks!!!

The first few that I made weren't too great either...but they've gotten better...and I can't stop!

Thanks!!!
I've used all different sizes...except for the really thin ones. And it's hard to explain how I attach them...someone else could probably do that better...but I'll try to post a picture tomorrow.

Not sure how or if you can do it afterwards...but thought I'd bump the question for you!:)

I too would like to see what the bottom side looks like, after the clip has been attached.

also when doing that 4 loop ribbon thing, with the thinner ribbon, layered....how do you hold it in place? do you use hot glue and layer top thin ribbon to bottom thin ribbon. then fold and adhere. ??

Trying again! I also need to know how you attach the bow to the clip, I see others have asked too. thanks!

I will post pictures tomorrow.

Once the bow is finished you can spray the bow with spray starch-in a well ventilated area. Let it dry overnight. Re-apply spray as needed.

Oh, good Lord, I think I just got addicted, and all I've done is read the thread!! I have a little boy, but my niece will definitely have a tutu for each day of our Disney trip!!

Thanks to those who posted tutorials and pictures!!

Thanks a TON for the tip on rolling the tulle and cutting the strips! I had been putting off making a tutu I NEED for next week only because I DETEST cutting out all the strips. Your method made it easy peasy! I finished a 1st birthday tutu in about 40 minutes using this method--can't wait to use it! I'll take a pic of it on my fav model when I get home. :)

OK, I couldn't stand it anymore!! DS is spending the evening with his second cousin, so I went out an bought supplies to try my hand at tutus and bows!!

Here are my first attempts (the keyword being attempt). I didn't measure a lot, so sometimes things don't match up exactly. I wanted to get the feel of everything...

Here's DNiece's Ariel-inspired tutu:

Hopefully I'll have it down by the time our September trip rolls around.

Ok--trying again. Hope it works this time! Yay it did! Can't wait to see this on my niece. :goodvibes

I just made my first tutu this weekend for my daughter- she is only 3 months old, so I got 3 yards of tulle, and then folded it in half twice to get a shorter length. It worked out great- here are a couple photos of her from today:
