How to keep family together on Southwest?!

We have never flown Southwest and didn't realize that we weren't guaranteed seats together! We are only a family of 3 but is there any way to be sure that we can sit together? We have already booked and under the "wanna get away" cheap fare. Can one adult upgrade to priority and take the child? ANy thoughts? Experiences?

How old is your child?
An adult traveling with a child six years old or younger may board during Family Boarding, which occurs after the “A” group has boarded and before the “B” group begins boarding. If the child and the adult are both holding an “A” boarding pass, they should board in their assigned boarding position. (From Southwest)

We buy the early bird check-in for each of us and we have yet to have an issue with the three of us getting to sit together.

Unless you're the very, very back of the line, it's unlikely that you'll be separated.

I exclusively fly Southwest, and often travel in a party of 3 (and often with just 2), and I have no problems sitting with my crew. I usually check in right at 24 hours ahead, and I usually end up in A boarding or even beginner B boarding. I might not always get to sit in the very front of the plane, but I can usually get 3 seats together. Even at B-40s, I was able to sit with my travel partner and because it wasn't a full flight, we had a private row. We sat towards the back, but we had extra room.

When you check in, all three of you will get checked in and should be in order "i.e. A 25, 26, 27" so you should be going together in line anyways. It's a matter of finding an empty row. As long as you're not C boarding, you should find an empty row.

They do the "Business Select" boarding as well which reserves A1-15 positions for people willing to shell out stupid amounts of money, but I have not seen more than 2 people ever take advantage of it. So there's 15 spots everyone moves up in line. (Unless someone wants to pay to upgrade to Business Select, which they do ask before they start boarding...)

As gwynne stated, Family Boarding is an option if your kiddo is six or younger.

You can upgrade to Early Bird Check-In and it will automatically check you in, but it doesn't really guarantee you an "A" boarding position, either. They note that in the fine print. You could very well get a lower boarding position anyway, but you'll be $15-25 lighter in your wallet.

I would also absolutely use a computer or the Southwest Website and NOT their app to check in. Their app is garbage when it comes to checking in for flights. I have much better luck using a computer or their actual webpage on my phone than their app.

You guys are awesome. i feel SO much better! I should have added, DD is 5! I was hoping the 3 of us could sit together and could care less which row! I feel a bit more confident now that we don't have to worry. I will listen for this family boarding call- will all 3 of us go up or just me and DD and leave DH behind?

You only do family boarding IF you're not already in A group boarding. If you do family boarding only one of you can go with the kiddo, the other will be left behind to board in B (or C) group.

I pretty much used to fly SW exclusively to Orlando and at my airport there are two groups of people, families and golfers. I feel like if you're flying to Orlando on Southwest and don't fall into those groups, you're fully expecting a plane full of small children...

All three of you can board during family boarding and you will have no issues sitting together. We are a family of three and have flown SW exclusively for the last 5 years and have never had an issue with the gate agents "not allowing" the three of us to board together or any family waiting regardless of how many in that family.

I have had a Southwest flight where they did not do family boarding and early bird did not help. was a late morning flight coming from another airport. leaving my airport was a full flight and numbers only went to like B16. very few seats together as plane was over half full when boarding started. you should have heard the A boarders when they got on plane and very few seats/rows together. so yes even with early boarding there might not be the avaible seating as the people already on plane to do mot have to get off and reboard

I agree with much of your comment, but those A1-A15 positions are not just for people willing to pay $40 for them. My DD and her DH fly a lot and have A-list preferred status and also get those boarding positions. And I always checkin via the app!

Yes to all of this.

Only do that if you didn't check in at 24 hours and don't have A.

I've never had earlybird boarding, I've even entered a plane with people already on it, and I still got to sit together with the family.

If you buy the early bird check in, it will check you in at 36 hours. We usually get A or sometimes low b and we are able to get 3 and 1, there are 4 of us. One time we didn't buy early bird and I was a bit late checking us in at 24 hours and we got high b's and still sat in 3 and 1, it was just at the back of the plane. Don't worry, you should be fine.

Don’t stress it OP
If EB makes you feel better, buy that but honestly... you ll very likely get three together, just not way up front. Safe travels!

I would also make sure you print your boarding pass as close to 24 hours prior to travel as possible if you aren't going to purchase the Early Bird. Just as a safety net.

Yes, but in 95% of the flights I've been on, there usually only one or two people (at the most) out of the fifteen that take advantage of it. So it does oftentimes wind up being empty space.

It’s changed recently though. The flights we’ve flown this year had positions A1-15 full. We had early bird and ended up with a B boarding position. I’m not paying for early bird anymore if it isn’t going to get me an A boarding position. I’ll take my chances and log in at the 24 hour mark and see what I get.

They specifically say 2 adults can board with a child in family boarding - other minor siblings obviously can as well.
