How to hang garland on staircase?

I've had just plain garland that I've used before, and just wrapped it around the staircase, but this year I bought the lighted kind with pinecones, etc. Anyway, I was thinking of just hanging it on the 'outside' not wrapping it around, but in that case, what do I use to get it to stay on the staircase? Hope that was clear. Thanks.

I have been struggling with that for years since I don't want to put adhesives on the railings. I used floral wire one year, which worked well, except the cats had a field day if they found a piece which was loose. Last year DH suggested dark green zip ties. Just wrap around the railing and garland, zip tight, and cut off the excess. Worked well and you hardly noticed them.

I twist mine around the railing and secure it with raffia, I have raffia throughout the garland along with berries anyway, so you don't notice it. Ribbon would work well too, you could even tie some nice big bows along the way. Fishing line is another great option if you don't want anyone to see it. I use fishing line to hang the wreath on my front door.

I would use the thin metal wire you can get at craft shops. Or very light, clear colored string (it's not really string but I'm not sure what you'd actually call it).

I have the same issue this year. We usually just wrap the garland around, but this year we have the lighted kind. I just hope our dog lets us keep it up. I have a bad feeling that if it's not wrapped around, he will try to remove it...

Be careful if you use wire that it doesn't dig into your wood work or scratch it. The wood on our railings used to be fairly soft and I know wire would have put a good scratch in it.

are you not supposed to 'wrap' the lighted kind? I bought 4 of them on clearance at target after christmas last year with the intention of 'wrapping' them around my inside staircase.

is this a no-no?

I don't have a staircase but last year I used the 3M command hooks over my door and around the windows. The adhesive didn't leave any kind of mark on the walls or frames when removed.

I've wrapped lights into my plain garland and wrapped them around my staircase. I would think you could do the same but I'd be interested in knowing that as well as I have considered getting the lighted kind and replacing my old stuff.

i used zip ties last year...we moved into our house about 1 week before christmas...the only christmas decorations i had up were the tree and the garland around the staircase. i'd always wanted to wooden bannister and finally got one! we're getting ready to start putting our decorations up again this year...will probably invest in more zip ties!

our cat doesn't seem to bother any of the christmas decorations, but we have a new puppy! she's about a year old now...first christmas with her ought to be interesting!

I use zip ties for hanging things on my rails, and then if it is visible I'll tie bows to the zip tie. I like it better than winding as it is much easier to get off when you take things down. It can get windy here, so I zip tie my net lights to my bushes too, and zip tie the cords so they stay put. DH does computer work so we have tons of containers of them - they are cheap and really easy to use.

I'm sure it would be fine to wrap it around. For me it's just that the lighted garland is thicker and more difficult to manuever around the banister. Either way looks fine.


I can't wait to put up Christmas decorations.

I like to use wire edged ribbon. I bought some a few years ago and use it every year. I've even put the ribbon in the box with the garland and just fluff it up the next year. Sometimes I'll use strands of beaded garland casually wrapped with the pine garland to add a little more sparkle.

it all sounds so pretty...now we need pictures!!

I swag the garland on the stairs, and use gold wired ribbon. I attach it on the newel post, and then swag it three times, up the stairs.
My kids need to be able to hold on to the railing, so wrapping around it wouldn't work for us.

I love decorating for the seasons...just fun

Y'all will ROTFL when I tell you how I do it - I use knee high hose! They blend right in with the wood and no worries about scratching. I tie them around the garland and hide the knot under the garland. When I'm done I cut them off and throw them away. I guess if your railing is white you could use white hose, but I don't know if they'd camoflage as well. Good luck with your decorating! I can't wait to start mine, but I will wait until after Thanksgiving
