We're going to be staying at ASMu and we want to go to Boardwalk, but I don't know where that is. How would we get from our resort to the boardwalk area? Is there a bus like there is to DD? It sounds as if it is within walking distance from EP but if I don't have a park pass for EP that day can I still go to boardwalk? We don't have park hoppers so trying to plan things accordingly. Thanks!

Take the bus to DHS and then either walk to the Boardwalk or take the boat. No park admission would be required to do this.

If DHS isn't open when you want to return, you'll need to either take a taxi or bus to Downtown Disney and transfer there to the ASMu bus. The route via DD can take a long time, so would be my last choice.

Absolutely right...take the bus to DHS, then either walk to Boardwalk (along the sidewalk that runs beside the canal and takes about 15 mins) or take the boat...about 15 mins plus any wait time. I usually choose to walk. Nice, safe walk.
I would actually choose a night to head there that some park is open late...but not Epcot since you would need to enter in order to get a bus.
If DHS isn't open when you're ready to leave, try to see if another park is open at that time. Then take the bus to that park from BW and then transfer to the All Stars bus from that park. Or, just head to DTD. You could always wander around there for a bit as well.
