How to get rust stains out of car interior?

Hi, my husband borrowed a generator from a friend during the recent ice storm and transported it in the back of my minivan. The bottom of the generator was rusty and left stains on the back of the rear seat (the seat was folded down into the floor in order to accommodate the generator).

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding removing the rust stains? Part of the issue is that the seat-back is not upholstered, but is covered in carpet (to match the rest of the car floor when the seat is folded all the way down) so if I try to scrub it with a brush the brush catches in the carpet.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Cleaners that contain oxalic acid doe a good job of extracting rust stains. This is often a problem found in marine crafts on a variety of surfaces. Savogran, along with many others, package these cleaners for sale. Oxalic acid is often found in certain cleaner for wood decks, particularly the ones to restore original color to tannin woods like redwood. The container should list it as an active ingredient, so look around your house you may have something containing it. However, it would be prudent to test it on a small inconspicuous area of carpet beforehand.
