We are giving our child a netbook for Christmas but want to install office. We have the disc but the netbook doesn't have a dvd/cd drive. Can we connect it to the desktop(with disc in) and install to the netbook? Someone suggested using a portable disc driver with a usb connection? Not very computer literate in case you haven't guessed :)

I believe you can download it online using a product key card (purchased at best buy) or you can download it using your existing product key on the Microsoft site.

You may be able to do it with a USB connection... I'd have to ask my DH about that.

Just FYI ~ the netbook may not have enough memory to support Office. :)

I bought an external disc drive as someone suggested and put office and other software on that way. I bought it on Amazon for like $10 or so. Just search external disc drive. The drive has the USB connection to go in the USB drive on your netbook.

OH...thanks so much for the info;) I think they will be happy with the netbook especially if we can get the office on it!! Merry Christmas to all!!!

A couple ways to do it, the best is to get an external DVD drive for less then $50 and just plug it in via the usb port. The next is to put it into your desktop and make an ISO of the disk, then move the iso onto the net book and mount it with a free iso program. The best is to get an external dvd drive... I have a toshiba netbook with 2gigs of memory. It runs windows 7 and office ultimate just as well as my full size laptop. It is a nice unit. Jump over to Newegg and get yourself an external slim USB dvd/R drive. This way he/she can also watch dvds if they want... Plus if the netbook is new you need a dvd recorder drive to make the recovery disks...as they no longer come with them. You have to make them yourself. If you do not and the computer crashes you have no way to recover the computer as you do not have a copy of the operating system.

Hey that is some good info for us! Really helps me feel confident that they will be able to really use the netbooks!

Actually a great item. Super small, great battery life (my Tosh gives an honest 10 hrs), can do almost as much as a full size machine plus some have touch screens. Great for traveling plus I take mine to work when i don't feel like carrying my 15" notebook. I would get a case for it, i got mine from Big Lots... They have tons to choose from for less then $15. You should upgrade the memory if it is not 2gb but that is super easy and the card is less then $30...

Thanks.. I am going to let them pick a case as they are teens:) The netbooks are 4G and 500gb harddrive so I should be ok ...right?Thanks again & Merry Christmas!

Google "open office"

its free and should support anything a teen might want to do in microsoft office.

I forgot the exact step.. but you should be able to google it.

Basically, I put the office CD in my laptop's DVD, then I "share" out the DVD drive (this is the part you need to find the exact step).
I then "mount" the laptop's DVD to my netbook (again search on how to do it), and run the install from there...

Bottom line is that I made the DVD drive "available" to machines on my network.
