How to deal with hyper active kids...

Like, emotionally hyperactive or physically has a lot of energy? My 6 year old from day one has been a go-er (kept going into labor at 5 months pregnant, came out at 37 weeks so that girl can't do anything normal paced!). As soon as she could walk, she ran. Everywhere. And still does, which is hilarious because she runs super weird (apparently she runs like me, wish someone had told me I look like that BEFORE now!). Anyways, wherever we go, we let her run. When I took her to Disneyland at 2.5, 3, 4, and 5 it was very slow (crowd size) so I would let her run ahead a ways then call out RED LIGHT. She would stop and wait for me, and then GREEN LIGHT again. All of this while there were maybe 10 other people in the vicinity and I could see her at ALL times. So, I say make em run. Throw balls and have them run and catch them (like fetch!) or say, let me see how fast you can run to XYZ and then when they come back, well let's see if you can beat that time. Over and over again. LOL. She loves Simon Says so I go with a LOT of jumping jacks, hop on one foot, run in place, dance crazy, etc. Hope that helps!

If these are your children, take them to get truly evailuated, you do not want this just to be your opionion. If they are medically dx, then ask the professionals that will be dealing with you how to cope and deal.

If these are not your children, be kind and patient, and learn your personal limits as to how much time you can spend with them.

My son is an active physical boy who is not hyperactive, but his grandmother insist that he is because she is sedinatary and anyone who moves as much as my son is alien to her. Since he does well at school, is never a behavior problem there, can concentrate and obey I know she is wrong.

You cannot diagnose a two year old with ADHD, if you were thinking of doing that. Four may even be too young. Some kids are active. Four out of six of mine are/were very active. The oldest is very slow acting now (he's 21). The almost ten year old is still pretty busy but I wouldn't say hyperactive.

Wish I had advice. My doctor told me to be happy, it could be worse. That put it into perspective for me.

I would say that a high percentage of 2 and 4 year olds are hyper.

My oldest was never physcially hyperactive but emotionally could not shut off. He has ADHD and Aspergers and we did not start to diagnose him with ADHD until 1st grade, and just now are understanding his Aspergers. My DD is an absolute nut- all over the place, never shuts off, etc. Climbing, crawling, into everything. That's just a 5 yr old tomboy -and as soon as she is in school I think she will mellow out substantially.

If you are truly concerned ask your dr- however it is far too early to diagnose any child with a hyperactivity condition.

Are you looking for tips on how to calm your children in the parks while waiting in lines? I guess I'm confused what you are asking for:)

First..be thankful for healthy normal children:goodvibes.

Than...Find lots of ways to let them be active!! They are suppose to be!!
Get them outside and give then open ended toys ;Balls, trikes etc and let them play!! Take them to a park and let them loose on the playground or in an open field wirh a kite!!

If you have to stay inside, find ways to be active. Put on music and let them dance, move around table and chairs to create a open area to play. Take a trip to an indoor play area or a fast food place that has a play area.

When they need to calm down, plan transistion time to help them. Offer a warm bath, books , a snack.

Avoid too much tv& too much sugar. Be sure they get enough sleep at night and plan a nap or at least a rest time during the day,

Try to avoid labels such as hyperactive. They may try to live up to the name!!
good luck, and be strong!!!!

honestly, id be more worried if a 2 and 4 year old wernt hyperactive.
theres far too many kids that just sit around and play video games and watch t.v. all day..

just wear em out, sign em up for sports, take em for runs, or walks, go to the park.

What 2 and 4 yr old isn't hyper? Luckily the weather is getting nice, so lots of outside playtime helps!! Otherwise gymnastics places around here do open gyms during the week, or there is McD's playland, children's museums, Pump It Up, Monkey Joe's....there are a lot of options out there.

i would get a diagnoses. i always said my son was very active and friends told me just wait as he gets older it will get better. It didnt, he is now almost 6 and was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. i was told 1 in 20 children have some for of spd. good luck!

Kids are no different than most dogs. They build up energy and need exercise to drain it. Some days after they (the kids, or dog) have been stuck in the house, they start driving you nuts, I tell them, "OUTSIDE and 10 laps around the house!" They need mental challenge or physical challenge to burn off that pent up energy.

Now if you were telling me you let them eat all sorts of sugary and processed foods, then I’d tell you to change their diet.

I like your idea, I'll try it next time :)
Thanks a lot guys

A good puppy is a tired puppy, Same with kids. Too many people now don't let kids be kids and get tired! Give them a lot of activity physically and mentally.
Even if they are inside they should still be moving. If outside don't keep everything structured let them just play. Make sure they have mental stimulation also not just sitting in front of TV. Sure some can be just fun stuff but put Nat. Geo. on or even Mythbusters something that gives them some "thinking" also. Mostly let them be kids and be active.

Personally, I find DUCT TAPE works well...but sometimes the kids' Moms object:laughing:

This post is sooo vague.

This cracked me up. But it is so true. My boys were so active when they were little. I wish I had bottled some of it for them to use when they were older. In the winter when they couldn't get outside. I had to make them do jumping jacks or we would put on music and have a dance-off. Great memories.

Oh you most certainly CAN dx a 2yo with ADHD and not even 4 is to young when its severe enough.

I have a cousin who was dx at 2 years old and my youngest child was dx right after his 3rd b-day. My cousin at age 2 hit, threatened people, completely out of control hyperactivity. My oldest child at age 4 got a preliminary dx. When I say he bounced off the walls, I mean it literally (he ran down the hallway over and over throwing himself from one wall to the other).

My youngest right after his 3rd b-day stopped sleeping. He slept for 2, 2 hour naps each day and that was it. He's 7 now and hasn't had his meds today and is throwing himself off my couch over and over.

In a child with ADHD it's not just the hyperactivity, but the impulse control as well. Both my kids, even at a very young age, would do things and have no idea they had actual done them. You could see the look on their face when they realized they had just thrown something across the room, but would have no idea how it happened. Neither do they have good control over emotional outbursts, often hitting, throwing, destroying things, tantrums well beyond what is considered normal. Its not just a bit over the top, its over the top, over the next hill, up the next mountain, down the valley, and 2000 thousand miles more beyond that!

As for dealing with hyperactivity, in our family we know its going to occur so we make room for it. They have plenty of outdoor activities, a place to play in the basement (on bikes or scooters even) during bad/cold weather, and no matter what, the moving, running, jumping, isn't going to stop so we just live with it.

At disney, we have some simple rules, stay in site, try to keep the volume at a dull roar, and have fun!
