How to apply ribbon to fabric?

I am sewing things for presents.
i am having trouble deciding how to apply ribbon to the cotton fabric i bought. I have fabric glue and i have glued ribbon to fabric. But I'm not sure if that is the best way. I don't want to make the Mickey Silhouttes look bad with sewing through them so what do i do?

For wider than 1/4", I turn the stitch length down low and sew with matching thread right up against the selvage on either edge. It's taken me a long time to get decent at it. Less than that, I'd either sew down the middle with thread that matches exactly, or glue.

I have one friend who uses a blindstich technique, and another who sews her narrow ribbon on with contrasting and sometimes metallic thread. The blindstich creates a lot of loops on the backside.
