Considering buying, but have a ? re adding points after we make our initital purchase. How do you add points? Do they have to be bought from Disney, or can you buy it from other sellers? (....can you combine 2 contracts you may have bought from private sellers, provided they have the same home resort?)

The easiest way is thru Disney. If they have the points available (some older resorts like the Beach Club and BoardWalk have a waiting list), you get them immediately--the points will be in your account within 24 hours. A deposit is given via credit card over the phone and they'll send the paperwork Fed Ex. No closing costs on add-on purchases thru Disney.

An add-on thru Disney will be recorded as a sub-contract to the master you already own. If the Home resort is the same, it's seamless to combine points for reservations. And they will only sell you an add-on with the same Use Year (unless you buy another Master contract of 160+ points), so the banking terms are the same.

For resale the experience is pretty much the same as any first-time resale purchase. You have to find the seller, complete the agreement, go thru ROFR, close, wait to get added to DVC's computers, and so on.

The second contract will be completely separate. Even if you have the same Home resort, you'll have to be careful in managing the points. You can book whole nights under each contract, but can't combine points unless you transfer.

Let's say you are left with 5 points in one contract and 20 in another, and want to use those points to book a night that costs 25 points. My understanding is that you would have to initiate a transfer between the two contracts in order to get all of the points into a single bucket. That would be your only transfer of the year.

If the Use Years are different you need to keep tabs on different banking periods.

Not quite correct. If you have the same UY and same resort you do not need to transfer points back and forth. The addition is just that- an addition to the original contract.

My understanding is the same as that of tjkraz.

That's only true if the contracts are set up as a Master and an add on. If you buy directly through Disney, that will be the case.

However if you buy one or both via resale, even if the home resort and use year are the same for both, the contracts may not get set up as a Master -add on arrangement. Instead, they could be set up as two separate memberships. In that case, a transfer is always needed to combine points in order to reserve a single night.

A Master - Add on arrangement will be numbered as follows:

Master 123456.000
Add on #1 123456.001
Add on #2 123456.002

If your contracts are not numbered like that, they are totally separate contracts with different membership numbers.

I stand corrected.
:)

It is also my understanding (newbie though I am) that if you buy the same resort and same use year for your second resale purchase, you can have the second contract added to your same membership #. Just have to make sure the paperwork is done correctly. Is this untrue?

That's my understanding. My BCV will be an add on to my BWV with the same UY. I specifically requested that BCV be an add on. I will only have the 11 mo booking window for the points I hold at each specific resort but at the 7 month window, all the points can be combined.
