How the Other Half Lives ~ Updated 10/22: I Forgot Something!

I'm all caught up. Great Updates! Love the text from home - that Saturday it snowed ALL DAY!

I'm so excited to hear about your upgraded room - too funny that Dug "played it cool" and acted like it was no big deal. :cool1:

Very fun TR! We got to stay at Poly once and got upgraded to a castle view - it was spectacular! I'm going to have to look for those Buzz videos before we go again!
Wow, that's awesome that you got upgraded to a castle view!!! I bet it was amazing!

I know I posted the link to the Buzz cheats in one of my TRs...can't remember where. Okay, I just searched and here's where the video we used is: http://www.disneyeveryday.com/buzz-...spin-cheats-video-secrects-to-scoring-999999/

Nice that you decided to skip the bag. Can I be nosy? What did you bring along in the parks in it before? I can't wait until I can stop carrying one. If not for the kids, I don't think I'd bring anything I couldn't stuff in my pockets. :confused3
Let's see if I can remember what all was in there...pretty much anything you might possibly need while in the park:
Ponchos
Umbrellas
Water bottles
Camera
Video Camera
Chargers/Dug's random electronics
iPods
Random medications/first aid
Sunglasses
IDs/misc cards
Chapstick
Sunscreen
Bug spray (never once used at WDW)
Touring plans
Hidden Magic book
Snacks
Disinfectant wipes

I'm sure there was a lot more, but that's what I remember off the top of my head. The nice thing about cooler weather is that we have jacket pockets to utilize. My camcorder fits in the pocket of my jacket, which is handy.

Great job on Buzz! I can't wait to see if you do max it out before this Disney year is up..
Well, you just may see another 999,999 score later in this TR, but I'm not telling who got it....:rolleyes1

So glad you finally got your pretzel! It looks really yummy. I had actually started thinking of you every morning we passed by there and it's closed. :rotfl: Too funny about your dining neighbors, too. Maybe they'll pop up in a TR soon? I've never noticed anyone taking food pics before. Definitely a DIS thing!

Awesome morning! You've done so much already. Can't wait to see this giant gingerbread house!
That pretzel was very yummy! Of course, we were starved by that time. So funny that you think of us! :rotfl: I'll keep my eye out for those dining neighbors in the TRs!

Hope to get the gingerbread house up soon...maybe tonight...we'll see.

I'm all caught up. Great Updates! Love the text from home - that Saturday it snowed ALL DAY!
What a crazy day! Bummer that you were stuck in it. I'm so glad we got out just in time! We'll have another poor-puppy-in-a-snowstorm pic coming up soon!

I'm so excited to hear about your upgraded room - too funny that Dug "played it cool" and acted like it was no big deal. :cool1:
I think he kind of felt like he had to play it cool or else he might have looked too eager/greedy if he got really excited on the phone. He wasn't aiming for an upgrade, just a quieter room. After all, the Poly had already been really generous with us, so we didn't want to take too much advantage. But, hey, if they want to offer, we'll accept! :cool1:

Just a quick note that when I called the Poly to check on our room, the person at the desk said they would make sure to put our room on a rush list to make sure it would be ready soon. This fact may or may not be relevant later on... :rolleyes1

You are going to love this. My husband got the 999,999 score on Buzz on our honeymoon. this was the first time he ever stepped foot in disney. He got it about halfway thru the game and was super bummed he couldn't play anymore. I was so excited and told the CM at the end of the ride that he got the high score ( i heard on the Dis that you can get some extra pixie dust if you say something). She looked at me like I was crazy, sneered and said "well good for him!" In a very snotty tone. Not so magical after all. :rotfl:

I love your reports, as I have said about 1000 times. The trailers are hilarious and take me back to disney at christmas time. Did you end up doing MVMCP? I thought you said you were, but cant remember. If we get to change our dates (discount willing), I want to do it.

Wow, that's crazy! I hadn't heard about the telling a CM thing. Apparently it's a good thing I didn't! :rotfl:

Thank you so much! It's good to know when people are enjoying! :goodvibes

We did indeed do MVMCP on our second night! With the cold weather, the snow on Main Street almost could have been real!

I hope you get a discount for the dates you want!

We got off the boat at the Grand Floridian and headed inside to see the decorations. We joined the line for goodies at the window in the gingerbread house. Ended up getting a little gingerbread man to snack on later. We didn’t actually eat it until a couple weeks after we got home. Surprisingly, still tasty and edible!

Not a lot else to say in this update, but quite a few pictures:

Once we'd checked everything out, we took a little break, just sitting on one of the couches in the Grand Floridian’s lobby. After a short time, we decided to head over to the Poly. Surely the room would be ready by now—they had put a rush on it! We headed out to walk over to the Polynesian.

We also got another update on Bailey’s afternoon:

She walked around the circle following the tire tracks, then plowed through the drifts to get back to the front door.

Up next: Ahhhhh, the Poly! :cloud9: Will our room be ready? Will they really let us into the Hawaii building? Is this all a dream?

I just had a thought. I wonder how many people have loved ones take a picture of them licking or "pretending" to lick the gingerbread house? :rotfl2:

Hi!! I have officially stalked you through all of your PTR's and TR's and am just starting on this one - of course I subbed!! :happytv: I love living through your trips, and I am sorry about your loss before your trip  - but I can't wait to read about these adventures. I am hoping at the end you will tell us how 2011 will also be a year of Disney as well!! Maybe you should pay attention to that secret - and think about DVC - it's the best thing I did for my family... Now I sound like a sales agent - not!

Anyway keep up the writing and I love your trailers - they have to be the most creative thing I have ever seen :thumbsup2! I am so wrapped up in all of this, that yesterday I received an email from dd's school about an outbreak of impetigo - and I immediately thought of DUG!! There is something wrong with my warped thinking :scared1:!! But I feel like I know you guys...

Anyway, I do have a question, you keep talking about free ice water - we always go in July and with 4 kids in tow that could come in handy! How exactly do you go about asking for it... Do you buy something else, or just ask for waters, and if so how do the CM's treat you? I'm afraid they will look at me like some cheap skate - although going to disney with 4 kids and having a dvc - I don't think so... I just afford water after all of that- lol !

Those gingerbread houses look really neat! I can't wait to see them! I also can't wait to hear about your room!
P.S. I know I said this before but Bailey is just too cute!

Uh oh...:scared:

Great updates! Can't believe it only takes a few minutes to get from the Poly to MK, that's awesome! :thumbsup2

I love those little scenes at the end of Space Mountain, they should totally have a restaurant like that!

The GF is so pretty, I love that Gingerbread house! We didn't see it this year, but we went the year before and it was amazing! It's so big! :cool1:

Poor Bailey wandering around in the snow. The snow in the backyard is over our Bailey's head now (yes, we got enough snow in 2 weeks to be over a 94lb lab's head :sad2:)

Someday I'll see the gingerbread house in person  In the meantime thanks for the tour :thumbsup2

BTW the secret to a certain score is just to aimlessly shoot like a big idiot and hope for the best :rotfl:

Great pics! That house looks nifty. We only saw the one at Epcot..I totally forget where that was.. :confused3 This one is so much nicer! More "Grand Floridian" and less "covered in the cheap candies I saw at CVS" or something. I can't imagine that much honey all in one place though. Pooh Bear would be going nuts!

LOVED the little girl trying to sneak over the rope in your pic! :rotfl: That was great.

Glad Bailey was still having a great time!

Just joining in! Yay for another Minnesotan! :cool1:
I remember that storm well as we pretty much stayed inside that weekend. We aren't brave enough to travel in the winter yet for fear of the canceled/delayed flight so we have gone to Disney in the fall and the spring. Wish I could talk my hubby into by an annual pass :confused3

Firstly - That was one massive portion of nachos, but boy did they look tasty

Am really enjoying your trip report, I, in the many many flights I have done have never had a delay of more than an hour. I hope that now I have three small children that never changes.

Murphys law our flight will be delayed when we go in May.

Looking forward to reading the rest.

Kirsten

I just had a thought. I wonder how many people have loved ones take a picture of them licking or "pretending" to lick the gingerbread house?
Probably a bunch! I remember reading a TR where their kid ran up and tried to take a bite out of the house, I think. :rotfl:

Thanks for coming out of lurkdom to say hello! So cool to know that someone has been following along on all of these PTR/TRs!

2011 will not be an AP-style Year of Disney, sorry! :sad2: We are definitely considering a trip to CA to visit Dug's brother with a side trip to Disneyland, though! And, surprisingly, Dug told me today that he wouldn't mind making an annual trip to WDW! :yay: Although, the next one probably will not be until 2012 or 2013, we'll see.

We've considered the "secret" DVC, but it's just not for us. Although, after this trip, we both said that if they ever get a Poly DVC property we'd have to reconsider. We tend to travel on short notice, which makes DVC booking difficult. We also are big on discounts and, as far as I can tell, DVC annual dues (not including initial buy-in) would likely be more than we'd spend on resorts in a (more typical) year. Plus, we have a ton of non-Disney places we want to travel to.

I'm glad you're enjoying the trailers and the reports. So funny that you thought of Dug with the impetigo! I do that sort of thing too, thinking of people's TRs randomly.

The free ice water is at any counter-service place that has a soda fountain. Just go on up and ask for a glass of ice water. Sometimes you get big ones, sometimes small. No need to order anything else. I think it's probably a Disney-wide policy to give out free waters. We've never had any problems with it. Of course, I've never asked for six of them...:rotfl:

Those gingerbread houses look really neat! I can't wait to see them! I also can't wait to hear about your room!
P.S. I know I said this before but Bailey is just too cute!
Oh, you like cute Bailey pictures? Check this out (her cutest puppy picture--from the day we met her):

Wow! Thanks for finding that for me!
You're welcome! Enjoy!

The Poly is so convenient to the MK (and Epcot)! I'm glad I'm not the only one that enjoys the Space exit! It's crazy how big that gingerbread house is!

Poor Bailey wandering around in the snow. The snow in the backyard is over our Bailey's head now (yes, we got enough snow in 2 weeks to be over a 94lb lab's head :sad2:)

Wow, you've gotten a ton of snow! Your poor Bailey! I hope you get to see the gingerbread house someday! Hmmm....I used to use your Buzz strategy, but somehow it didn't work out so well for me...

Glad Bailey was still having a great time!
The Epcot one is in the American Adventure area! We have a hilarious picture from that coming up later in the TR! :rotfl: I was thinking about Pooh with all that honey too! I love that we have the little girl in our pic!

Just joining in! Yay for another Minnesotan! :cool1:

Yay for Minnesotans! :yay: Yeah, I understand the hesitation to travel in the winter. We take our chances, though. Oddly enough, the flight delay was totally non-weather-related. :confused3 Nothing wrong with going fall and spring, though!

Firstly - That was one massive portion of nachos, but boy did they look tasty

:welcome: It was indeed a ton of nachos. Luckily, we had six of us, so that helped. I hope you never have a long flight delay...I'm sure your flight itself is long enough as is!

Ack! I can't believe how far behind I am!

Is that a Canadian expression? I have no idea what that means! :confused3:rotfl:

I didn't know it was that uncommon so I had to look it up when you asked. It is actually British origin. Not surprising, we have a few more british expressions and words that are used here than would be used in the US. For example, when I grew up we sat on a "chesterfield" in the "front room" rather than on a sofa in the living room. We ate "chips" rather than fries but we still called a bag of chips "chips" rather than crisps as the british would. We are starting to lose these expressions though.

Seemed that the whole family, kids and parents, were screaming and yelling :chat: (not necessarily in an angry way, more in a running around crazy way, I think).

Our luggage had been against the connecting door while we slept. Dug said that he thought the kids had tried to open the connecting door, but the luggage was in the way.

:sad2: Oh NO, The noise would freak me out! I hope we don't get connecting rooms at POR!!

Dug had talked about calling down to the front desk to see if we could change to a non-connecting room. I didn’t think we should, as we already were staying for free that night and I didn’t want to push our luck anymore. But Dug was on the phone anyway…

When I finished brushing my teeth, Dug came over and said, “Do you love your husband?” I said, “Yes…why?...” He said something to the effect of, “Because I got us a new room…in Hawaii!”

Yahoo DUG!!!!! that's awesome. There is one thing I'm not understanding though. How does this translate into staying the whole time at the Poly rather than the split stay with CSR? Did I miss something or will this be revealed in time?

Not really much of a line at Space, so we rode twice…once on each side. Dug’s tweet from that:

“Nothing like the fear of imminent decapitation to start your day right!”

Those first couple of hours in the parks are always so productive and fun. You can always knock of the headliners with out too much hassle. I just wish getting out of bed wasn't so dang hard!

we decided to hop on It’s a Small World. And boy will we find out how true that is later on in the trip… :rolleyes1

Ohh, this sounds interesting...

We ordered a cream cheese pretzel and a taco hot dog. Found a seat outside. Here’s the food:

Finally, one more check mark on your bucket list!

I love that there's a little girl climbing the rope in the background :rotfl:

What a rebel! :)

Sensing frustration ahead. Wondering what happened.

I'm so happy that I had an update to read when I signed on today!!! I'm going to have to try one of those cream cheese pretzels in Aug.
Congratulations on the room in Hawaii!!!! Can't wait to see the pics! Good thing that the kids didn't break in. That is one thing that I try to be conscious about when staying in a hotel, keeping my kids voices at a normal INSIDE voice. It's just being courteous to those who may be there without children or older children who sleep in. Plus who knows how many people have late flights! ;)

A little late but I had to jump in :) I work at the MSP airport so I'm guessing you had to go to the C World Club across the connector from G16.. :) It sure does make a difference sitting in there versus the gate area esp so late at night...:thumbsup2

Can't wait to read the rest of your TR :)

subscribing! popcorn::

really enjoyed your updates so far.. very touching about seeing that photo of Dug's grandparents in Epcot

and you mentioned you listen to WDW Today podcast? I love that show! (one of many I listen to in the car on my commutes back & forth to work :thumbsup2)
